A smarter, safer bet.
While the Arcteryx Voltair 30L Backpack doesn't give you the go ahead to drop big lines on high-danger days, it does increase your odds of surviving a slide. This electronic fan-powered airbag sets itself apart from other avy packs with the ability to deploy multiple times on a single charge, so you can practice in the field to be sure you're dialed on the deployment process when the worst happens.
The Voltair utilizes a removable battery (included in this combo kit) that performs in temperatures as low as 14F. This battery powers the airbag's centrifugal blower to achieve the same pressure and fill rates as airbags with gas cartridge systems, and the blower pulses air after deployment to ensure full inflation even if the bag is punctured during an avalanche.
Going beyond the Voltair's airbag, this backpack boasts a capacity suitable for full dawn-to-dusk days in the backcountry and gear-intensive objectives. Arcteryx made it out of highly durable, seam-taped nylon that sheds snow and spindrift. The pack's suspension system features stable aluminum stays, padded shoulder straps, and a padded waist belt with single leg loop for additional safety. It carries skis and snowboards diagonally, or a single ice axe, and there's a weatherproof sleeve designed specifically for avalanche gear.

Great in Most Environments
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
Like most things Arc'Teryx does, the pack is impeccably designed and exceptional in terms of quality. All the features are well thought out and the deployment in particular is really smooth. The pack also carries weight well and rides very comfortably. I would prefer an auto deflate as opposed to the current manual option, but I suppose that has it's benefits as well.
Ultimately I returned the pack, but only because I learned after purchasing that the temperature rating had been downgraded. In most temps it would probably work great, but since I spend time in Alaska and other extremely cold environments, I didn't want to take the chance. Arc'Teryx was great about the return and even gave me a credit for my troubles. Nice to see the service reflects the high quality of the product.
If you'll be using the pack in the lower 48 or similarly situated regions around the world, I say go for it. You won't be disappointed.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
As with most things Arc'Teryx this pack is well made. It is a bit heavy with the battery but the suspension helps as the pack rides really well and is comfortable to carry. I have the 30L and it allows for plenty of space to carry anything I would need. In comparison with a touring partners pack that is not an air bag the weight difference was pretty marginal.
I have tested the air bag several times. It's intuitive to use. It is quick and easy to inflate the bag and equally as quick and easy to deflate and repack the airbag.
So far, I'm very impressed with this pack.
