Made to move in the mountains.

Whether you're trekking above treeline in late summer or climbing in the alpine during the fall, you'll want to be wearing the Arc'teryx Men's Gamma AR Softshell Pant. This three-season technical pant offers the stretch, abrasion-resistance, and weather protection you need for spring-through-fall alpine and climbing adventures. Being part of the AR family, the Gammas are designed to perform well in, and handle, all around conditions that you'll find up in the mountains.

Burly Double Weave fabric is wind resistant while offering the breathability needed to stay cool and dry during intense ascents. The fabric is also highly abrasion-resistant to stand up to frequent brushes with rocks and bushes. A soft inner face offers a boost of warmth and is comfortable and soft against the skin. The stretch properties of the material won't hold you back as you high step to reach your next climbing hold.

A trim fit and pocket placements comfortably accommodate climbing harnesses, and it even allows the pant to fit underneath a hardshell pant when conditions get harsh. These pockets also lay close to the body to prevent snagging and tears. The thigh pocket is laminated to offer more storage without seams to cause chafing. So you don't have to bring gaiters with you every time you go out, bootlace hooks at the adjustable cuffs keep snow and debris out of your shoes when you're walking up loose shale and scree to the base of your route.

    Well-built softshell pant

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 204lbs

I purchased the Gamma AR pant to replace an old pair of Mammut Dryskin Extreme pants (Champ Alps) for ice climbing, snowshoeing, etc. After a couple weeks of climbing and snowshoeing, I'm generally impressed. The fabric is sturdy and reasonably wind-resistant. The fabric and DWR kept them dry in pretty much all conditions - including the spilled thermos incident. Much more stretch than Dryskin Extreme. The fabric also fended off all the insults of ice climbing - the pokes and scrapes of bushwhacking to climbs, dangling ice screws, chimneying off rock on the more, uh, architectural routes, etc. With Powerstretch tights underneath, I stayed reasonably comfortable in single-digit temps. I sized up to accommodate the fuzzy tights, and the XL is a little baggy on me. The leg taper keeps the pants from getting in the way, but I think I might have got away with a Large. The wind does get through these eventually, so layer accordingly. Snaps and zippers all work well. Two front pockets and one thigh pocket seem like plenty. I might have appreciated a second thigh pocket, but there is an argument for limiting the amount stuffed in pants pockets, so one thigh pocket will do. Nice built-in belt that works easily.

Complaints. The fly zipper could be longer for peeing while wearing a harness. Not an issue unique to these pants, but it is an issue. Also, I am a little concerned about long-term durability of the fabric. Will I wish for the doubled knees of my old Mammut pants? We'll see. Finally, I really missed the built-in suspenders of my old Mammut Champ Alps. The Arc'teryx belt, nice though it is, is no substitute for suspenders when challenged by a fully-loaded harness.

Still, overall a really good softshell pant for climbing, skiing, snowshoeing, etc. The only thing better would be a pant with strategically-placed windproof panels, like the Arc'teryx Alpha Comp pants. That would have its own issues, so who knows. I like the Gamma ARs. Already looking forward to using them next winter..

    So comfy

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'2"

The Arcteryx Gamma AR pant is so comfortable I literary live in them all winter long. They are so comfy that the Gamma is the one pant I am wearing when I am not skiing. They stretch and move with me and can handle any environment inside and out such as - shoveling snow, tuning skis, replacing garage door openers, sailing in frigid temps, or standing on loading docks. They clean up nicely with a bottle of nikwax. The Gamma AR are also stylish enough to take out to any local watering hole. Must have for anyone outside as much as I am.

    Great pants

You expect a lot from Arc’teryx, especially at these prices. Well these soft shell pants do no disappoint. They are comfy right away and worked great in the snow. The clip to keep tight against boot laces was a useful addition.

      Bomber Lightweight Pants

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 180lbs

Bomber mid-weight pants ideal for cool fall/spring outdoor sports. My favorite pants for shoulder season rain days. Can also work in winter w/ or w/o long johns (cozy liner) for xc-ski or warm downhill ski days. The athletic cut led me to go up a size . I am a 33 waist and generally prefer Medium. The Mediums were very tight in the quads & the crotch. I opted for Large which are a touch larger in the waist & length than I prefer but a far better fit than the constricted Mediums.

      Oh my, these are perfect!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large / Tall
      • Height: 6'5"

After trying on three different pairs of bulky, heavy outdoor/hiking pants, I decided I needed something slimmer, lighter, less baggy. That's when I discovered soft-shell pants, which led me to this pair from Arc'teryx. They're amazing! The fit is perfect, super comfortable and adjustable thanks to a slim waist belt you can tighten/loosen to get just the right waist dimensions. I also love how the large leg pocket is flat when empty and doesn't hang off your leg like cargo pants. Also, I'm 6 foot 4, so I ordered the Large / Tall option, and the inseam length is perfect. No alterations needed!

      Suck in your Gut!

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'11"
      • Weight: 180lbs

I wear a size 34 in other ArcTeryx pants. However, I was unable to buckle and zip the pants up. I consider my size to be athletic but these pants felt like tights around my thighs. Length was perfect though. Didn't get to try them because i was unable to get them around my waist. Returned!

      Love these pants

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Small-Regular
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 165lbs

I currently own a pair of lighter weight hiking pants by Mammut, but after hiking and backing at 5000+ft in the PNW in the later season, I needed a pair that was a bit more durable and warmer. The Gamma AR pants are worth every penny. Quality stretch fabric and extremely durable. I recommend wearing these pants in 60 degree temps or colder as they are a bit too thick for warmer temps. They also include grommets that clip to your boot or shoe to keep the pant leg down. Nice little bonus.

      Phenomenal hiking/climbing pant

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large-Tall
      • Height: 6'5"
      • Weight: 195lbs

I can't tout these enough. From a backpacker, day-hiker, climber and mountaineer these are, hands down, fantastic.

      Love them but don't fit

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Med/Large
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 215lbs

I really like these pants but I can't get a size to fit me. Both the Medium and Large actually fit but...

The mediums are crazy tight in the waist and perfect in the legs. The larges however are perfect in the waist and baggy in the legs! Kills me. I really wanted a pair of these but its a no go. The Gamma Rock in Large fit me perfect.

      my favorite purchase

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: medium
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 160lbs

out of all the gear I've bought at backcountry, these softshell pants are the best. Lassen, Shasta, Rainier, Ecuador volcanoes, Tahoe winter hikes/snowshoeing - I never wear anything else. Great fit, awesomely comfortable, warm on ascents, wicks well on descents, useful thigh pocket, useful gaiter clip for hiking/snowshoeing on hardpack - just a perfect softshell mountaineering pant. Every duffel packed for a trip deserves a pair of these.

      Burly fabric; alright sizing

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Small-Regular
      • Height: 5'5"
      • Weight: 138lbs

After wearing these pants for 30-days straights in the East Alaska Range, I can definitely say I am a fan. The fabric is super burly, and withstood crampon strikes, really dense bushwhacking and just general intensive use. While they would be a little bit much for warm weather hiking, they are perfect for anything below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The cut is flattering and practical, and the features are well thought out. I didn't find much use for the two hand pockets because I was wearing a harness, but the thigh pocket was awesome. Also, the gaiters/ankle cinch is really nice, though probably would not fit around anything thicker than a slim plastic boot (I used the Asolo AFS Evoluzione).

The only negative I have is the sizing. These pants do run a tad long, which would not be a problem if the short version was easier to find in stock. I wasn't too bothered by it though.

Overall, a bomber pant that I would definitely recommend.

I brought these for mountaineering in the Cascades in the summer, spring, and winter. They breathed very well while I was snowshoeing at Lassen this weekend. I usually run very warm, but these were perfect, even with my hard-shells over. them. I left the park this morning after waking up to torrential downpours and these got considerably wet while I was in the car changing out of my winter boots into more comfortable driving footwear. They dried fast and made for a comfortable ride, too. They are not constricting, but wish the thigh was made a little larger. I think I can fix that with some more exercise, though. Can't wait to wear them again in a few weeks on my next trip!!

I just got to use these pants a week ago temperatures ranged from about 43 F in the day down to 20F at night. They kept my legs warm without overheating wicked the moisture away when I did sweat. (Though my legs didn't sweat much) these were very comfortable and we're able to move every way my body did without restriction. They never got snagged on anything. And just all around felt very durable without costing any comfortability. Very impressed. I can't wait to wear these again out on the trail.

Been using it for a week now and I gotta say it's one of the best hiking/climbing pants I own/ever tried. Great pants. Very durable and well constructed. The sizing is true. The regular inseam was slightly long for me.they are slightly big around the waist, but are easily tightened up with the built in belt.
I am not complaining through so far they have impressed with their comfort and protection. The pant breath but keep you warm and feel good against the skin. I have yet to take them on a big trip though but on small hikes they have been great.
Overall, i like the pant. it has a good desigh, light quality, the fabric is not too thick. Everything is my want except the length of legs.

      Excellent pants

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

These pants are excellent. Perfect on a late winter hike up Old Rag Mountain in SNP: protected my legs during rock scrambles, blocked wind and chiil on the summit, but didn?t overheat once the late morning sun warmed things up heading back down. Hooks at leg openings were ideal to keep snow and rocks from getting in my boots. Used them a fair amount around the neighborhood during our seemingly endless winter in MD. Slight lining provided the right amount of warmth/protection from wind & cold while watching the kids sled but didn?t get my legs too warm while shoveling. Will be psyched to get them out more next winter. Pricey, but like all Arcteryx stuff solidly built to last.
