Thorium AR Hooded Down Jacket

Say hello to your new go-to piece for all your mountain activities, the Arc'teryx Thorium AR Hooded Down Jacket. This generalist down jacket functions well as a standalone option when hiking in cool, dry conditions, and it's also an excellent choice for layering under a shell when you need extra warmth during frigid backcountry ski tours or alpine ascents.

Its 750-fill down insulation is lightweight, yet very warm, and it's highly compressible for comfortable layering and easy storage when you don't need it. Synthetic insulation is strategically placed in areas that are more exposed to the elements, so that you still stay warm even if the insulation in those areas gets a little damp. The outer fabric also sports a DWR coating to repel light rain and snow, just in case you get caught out in a drizzle without an outer shell, and it's highly abrasion-resistant for peace of mind. Low-profile, elasticized cuffs and an adjustable drawcord hem seal out the cold, and an internal zippered pocket doubles as a stuff sack so you can efficiently stow the jacket in your pack if it starts to warm up halfway through your adventure.

  • Down insulator designed for cool, dry alpine conditions
  • 750-fill down is light, lofty, and compressible
  • Synthetic insulation in hood and sleeves to stay warm when wet
  • Arato nylon shell with DWR to shed raindrops and snowflakes
  • Adjustments at hem and StormHood maintain a secure fit
  • Includes 2.5L stuff sack for convenient storage
  • Item #ARC00TQ

Arc'teryx took the REI Stratocloud (wish they still made those) and beefed it up. I've owned a bunch of down jackets and this is the best. 5 stars for versatility, warmth, breathability, THE HOOD, and good features. This is perfect as an outer puffy layer for winter 14ers, and is equally suitable for a nice looking down jacket on a cold night around town. Abrasion/weather resistant face fabric, packs down reasonably small, awesome hood, and is just so warm. warm warm warm. Wore this skiing in Colorado with temps in the mid to high teens, and the only thing I had on under was a 200 merino base layer. Was very comfy, and I tend to get cold easily. If I had to cite a con it would be packability. It doesn't pack down quite as small as other jackets its size, but we're not talking about a huge difference here, and there's going to be a [minor] tradeoff for the burly outer fabric and small sections of synthetic insulation, which are nice to have btw. There is a clippable integrated stuff sack though which is handy. Also If you are tall maybe it will feel a little on the short side, but Im 5'6 and a medium fits perfect. Get this if you are looking for a very warm, all around down puffy.

For a 750 Fil jacket, it is not that warm. I have a 650 Fil Marmot Guide from Backcountry that is significantly warmer. However, this is a very nice coat as described. It is a great extra warm mid-layer to a shell. It would also be nice to just wear around town on cold, but not bitter cold days. Looks nice, has the name brand you may want to show off, but didn't really fit into what I was looking for.

The Thorium was a replacement to a Patagonia Down Sweater jacket because the Patagonia was huge in the torso. The Thorium is an excellent jacket and felt like it would be super warm. The exterior material feels more durable than most down jackets, the pockets were comfortable, and the overall finish was great. I had a problem with the fit. The area around the shoulder going into the upper arm was just too tight. It felt like I was being grabbed in the armpit, and was too restrictive. The torso fit well; much better than the Patagonia, but the cut of this coat was not made for people spending much time in the gym. I gave the jacket 5 stars because I'm reviewing the jacket itself which is definitely excellent, but the cut didn't work for me. If you are an outdoors person that isn't going to the gym to develop the upper body, this is probably a perfect coat. I ended up with the Fjallraven Keb Touring Down which fits my body type much better.

This jacket pretty much goes with me everywhere when it is cold out. It isn't the highest quality down so it doesnt compress as much as there cerium model but it is really nice. The fabric seems to be fairly burly and holds up against abrasion and wear. The fit is really nice and the length works great for me.

I'm 6'3" 220 lbs. I've worn an XL in every jacket ever. Put on the Thorium and WOW it was insanely tight. Could barely even zip the zipper haha. I like a slimmer fit jacket; Patgonia XL down hoodies always feel a little boxy and baggy for me, but this is ridiculous.

If you love the Cerium but want a little more durable face fabric, go Thorium!

Seriously Arcteryx? For what you charge, you can’t do a higher fill power? How about 850-950fp?

I wanted a down jacket I could wear over A T-shirt since it rarely gets lower that upper 30s for highs. I must say that this jacket does an ok job at that. The arms feel cooler that the rest of the jacket. My Patagonia Hi Loft Hoodie is warmer tha the Thorium AR Hoody for my purposes.

This jacket is amazing. It's light, warm, great blue color, definitely have been wearing it almost every day since I got it. I do agree with some of the other comments that the jacket runs a bit slim. I wish it was a tad longer in length and maybe a little wider around the waist, but at the same time, the slim profiled design would be good to use as a inner layer on cold touring days with another layer over, so I can see the design thought in that. Overall this jacket is amazing and I would definitely recommend it!

This jacket is close to perfect! I wanted something for everyday use that wasn't going to be very bulky but still keep my warm. This jacket fits me great, I am 5'8 170. I love the hood, it snugs up nicely when zipped all the way up but I can still wear a headlamp with out an issue. I would highly recommend this piece!

Great length, True to Arc'teryx size for me (XL for 46L jacket, 38" waist), perfectly warm in breezy windy teens over LS 150 merino baselayer and not too hot when it's up to 40. Perfect under a shell when it's colder or wet. Great length. Only niggle is no adjustment on hood. It fits well, but an adjustment to snug the hood around the crown of the head would make it perfect. Packs nice and small, about Nalgene size, and very low weight.

Please don't ever change this jacket Arc'teryx! Absolutely love it. It is great for a night around Park City or out on the trail snowshoeing with the family. Perfectly lightweight, super warm, great fit and love the hood. You aren't going to find a better down jacket out there to do it all!

Great for everything

This is my favorite down jacket from Arc'teryx for many reasons, first is the quality of down they use, it is a 750 fill euro goose down so the best of the best. In addition to great down insulation it also features coreloft insulation that will ensure that you stay warm even if the down gets soaking wet. If you are looking for a down to do it all, look no further. This is the jacket that is recommended for around town use, as well as for skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing, or whatever your passion. It fits true to size for Arc'teryx, with articulated arms for a comfy fit.

This jacket is awesome for every part of winter! I recommend getting a size larger than normal they fit really snug. I rock mine in the cold winter here in Italy and it does an awesome job on keeping me toasty. It is super light weight and packs down to almost nothing.

This is my first Arc'teryx purchase, I was considering a The North Face jacket and decided on this jacket after chatting with a Back Country rep. Although I reside in a high desert city, it still gets cold and occasionally it snows. My LL Bean Maine Wardens coat is too heavy and bulky, this jacket is perfect. I am able to layer with a fleece jacket when the temperature dips below 32 degrees for added warmth. I am very pleased with my purchase and with my Back Country experience.
