Amazing Rain Jacket!!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love Arc'teryx and have been wanting on of their jackets for a while. Their jackets tend to fit a little weird on me, the chest is pretty tight but the sleeves and everything are a good length, so I never end up buying anything. But this jacket was different! I went up a size, I didn't want this to be too tight since it is a jacket and I will probably layer under it, and it ended up fitting perfectly! It didn't look too big, and it was a good fit! It was loose but not huge, which I wanted in the jacket. It has been great so far, is definitely waterproof. There is no venting, but that hasn't been a problem for me yet. I love that it is pack-able and doesn't feel heavy. This is a great rain jacket and I can't wait to wear it more!

I already had a couple technical shells, including one from Arcteryx and did not need another jacket . I literally only bought this (in Laminum Pink) because I had seen it in the store and thought the color was beautiful. Like all Arcteryx its made well and im sure will last me a long time. A couple things that make this jacket different you should know about , if you care about more than the color : PROS : Its super lightweight and packable . Boxier shape is good for layering . No extra zippers or gaiters to add bulk. Not super long = awesome for mountaineering or hiking. This is not a ski jacket .... its light and pared down and does its job repelling snow, wind and wetness ( wore it on Denali and encountered seriously insane weather (wind, cold, snow, more snow, more wind) for 3 weeks) CONS: If you're wearing with a harness the pockets are in a weird place and if you have a high waist like me, you likely will have diffuculty accessing the pockets . My other Arcteryx shell has higher pockets . Perhaps this one is not meant for climbing ? Other con is - yep no pit zips. I knew this going into the purchase and bought it anyway (because PINK) and sort of regretted it when i was boiling on the glacier in the hot hot sun. Overall though I'm happy with my purchase. Size-wise I bought a medium as i wore it with a lot of layers underneath. I would fit a small just fine with only a base layer.

I was told this would be a great jacket for skiing, but.... no, it's really not. I need vents! It'll be going back.

Why did you buy a jacket without pit zips if you needed them?

If I could only choose one jacket for the rest of my life this would be it. Uses- EVERYTHING! It is amazingly light which makes it great for backpacking and travel. It packs up into its hood and is about the size of a Nalgene. It is durable and breathable enough to use ski touring. Classic and stylish enough for rainy days around town. Fit- The trim fit is flattering yet still leaves room for layers. I am 5'4" 140 with a petite upper body. I have worn this over a puffy while skiing or just a t-shirt hiking both look and feel great. The adjustability in the hood gives it a perfect fit and blocks out the elements without interfering with my field of view. Bottom line, this jacket has held up to Patagonian winds, a stormy backpacking trip in the PNW, windy dawn patrols, and rainy dog walks through town. Everyone could use this jacket.

Sleek and classy coat. I was nervous about transitioning from an insulated coat to just a shell, but I was surprisingly warm on a 10 degree day in just this coat and a micro puff Patagonia layer.

I bought this for my mom a while ago, she was wanting an awesome jacket for her rainy hikes. She looooves this. It kept her dry all spring/summer during the rainy season and she took it with her to Costa Rica, it worked great! You can't really go wrong with Arcteryx, if you're willing to spend the money you'll have a product for life!

I needed a waterPROOF shell jacket and I decided to bite the bullet, spend the money and order the Arc'teryx Beta SL. The jacket itself is of decent quality, all the seams were taped and the stitching was good. It seems like it would have and kept me dry...... But the cut of this jacket is so awkward I returned it . It's way too short in the front, barely coming to the top of my pants. The length in the back is good, but oddly disproportionate to the front. Also it is lacking a few features that would be nice in a jacket for this price, such as pit zips/vents, pockets big enough for an iphone, or an internal pocket. Overall this runs small, and if your between sizes or large chested DEFINITELY size up. If your looking for lots of layering room, maybe even size up 2x. I returned the Beta SL and ordered a Norrona shell..... and I LOVE the Norrona. Check those out before buying this, it had the extras I wanted and a better fit overall for a similar (or cheaper!) price.

Lisa, Thank you for the review. Sorry the fit was not right for you. Glad you found a shell that worked!

This jacket is now one of my favorite things in my closet. I have always had a hard time finding a rain jacket that has a big enough hood until now. I love the color and does an excellent job on keeping me dry. The only thing that I don't like about this jacket is that the material is super noisy. But overall its amazing!

Very, very light weight. Got a medium, tried a large and the style was lost with that size on me. Medium will not allow some layering for Northwest rain. Longer back to front is a bit too much in its design. All other technical design detail as described are present. Made in China. Cost is $299 oka $300 plus tax......over priced.

I finally coughed up for GoreTex because the DWR on other jackets kept wearing out too quickly. Worth every penny. I work at a backcountry lodge in Alaska and it rained so much this summer we were virtually under water--but this jacket kept me dry. Doesn't appear to be wearing out in areas that get repeated abrasion (like under pack straps and hip belt). This model doesn't have pit zips, which might be an issue in another climate region, but in the far north I don't miss them. Good fit (I usually get an XS but like the extra room for layering), and (my favorite part) a capacious hood to accommodate my be-hatted giant noggin. Solid jacket.

Dry as a goose!

Even though this jacket is the SL, it kept me SUPER dry during many coastal Alaskan rain storms. I shed water as well as this goose, and she is a pro! Review to follow.

I have put this jack through different climates. I initially bought it for my 29 day rafting trip from the high desert of southern Peru to the Rain Forest in the Amazon. True to size and very nice to have the additional extra length in the back of the jacket and a long the wrists for those week long rainy days. I have had it for the last couple years and still going strong.

Hey Abigail, you could definitely use this as a snowboarding jacket, sure!

I need to wear a down jacket under this just in case. I am usually a Small (5'6", 124 lbs, athletic build). Should I get a Medium in this in order to have ample room for my down jacket or layers? Or will I be alright with just the small?

I would get the medium. I usually wear mediums and it fit perfectly to my shape. A thin thermal layer should be fine in a small but for a puffy I would go up one size.

The recommended use on this jacket states Alpine adventures... would it be too hot for spring or summer hiking /backpacking trips?

It shouldn't be. It doesn't have any insulation, just a hard shell, so unless it's really warm out, you should be fine. And if it's really warm out, you probably don't need a rain coat anyway.

I'm taking a trip to Ireland in early April when the temps will be in the 30's - 40's, so I hear, and I'm wondering if this jacket will be warm enough. I'm obviously not worried about it's waterproof capabilities, I just want to make sure I'm toasty warm for exploring. Thanks!

Ireland's weather isn't too awful aside that it does rain at random times throughout the day, but I'd wear something for insulation under this if you get cold easily. I went last May and was fine walking around with just a hoodie under my rain jacket

I don't believe Arc'teryx does petite sizes, but the is a sizing chart that may be useful in selecting a size. Best of luck!

Hi, I have problem with choosing the right size. I have 170 cm leng but I'm very slim. Normally, I'm wearing clothing size s, xs. I don' know which size should I choose.

Kate, there's a helpful sizing chart above the 'Add to Cart' button. From the sound of it you're probably and XS but I'd double check the sizing chart to be sure.
