Arakys Approach Shoe

The Arc'teryx Women's Arakys Approach Shoe eliminates the need to bring along a pair of climbing-specific shoes when you go for lunch break gym climbs and quick after-work boulder missions. This innovative approach shoe is made for crossing technical terrain, but more than holds its own when bouldering, doing single-pitch climbs, or tackling quick routes on the gym wall.

The air permeable ripstop upper is tough, yet breathable, and a stretchy Adaptive Fit Lite liner conforms to your foot to eliminate hot spots, reduce break-in time, and provide a more secure fit. It also sports a collapsible heel so you can wear the Arakys as a laid-back slipper when you're on belay. The leather footbed allows barefoot comfort, while the EVA midsole cushions your step when you're hiking to a faraway crag for a bigger climbing mission. Vibram's Light Approach outsole provides sure-footed grip on muddy trails and granite walls alike, and the MegaGrip rubber compound offers the right blend of durability, flex, and rigidity needed to handle everything from quick climbs to long approaches.

Bummer! I’ve eyed Arc’teryx shoes (online), since discovering my first pair at REI online last spring and I wanted another pair. (If you find something you like, buy two!) Anyway. For that purchase, I was able to use an annual membership credit to help with the expense. I really like the colored soles! The hiking shoes that I have are every-day wearable (as it turns out) and a neat-o cobalt blue color, top and bottom. FYI - A number on an interior tag is: 643001 and another is: 071249-400280. Originally purchased for camping and hiking, I’ve ended up wearing them several times a week for walking around in and out of the house. (#FunDemic messing up outing plans and all; but I'm so please with these!) Now to the Arc'teryx Women's Arakys Approach Shoe, which were to be my "next" pair of a new favorite brand. I appreciated finding them on Backcountry and the reviews left by others. The shoe was a little bit on sale (-$30), and I thought it would be worth it, if they’d be any where near as comfortable and stylish as my first pair. Nope. I had them on around the house for about an hour (?!) and soon my toes started losing feeling. (Aaaccckk.) From the get-go, the neoprene-like upper was a disappointment, too, just seeing that while taking them out of the box; the design is just like a screen print. I still wanted to like them. The ribbon feature is cuteous. I really liked the colors. The sole seemed fine; but "out of step" with the upper. The soles on my existing Arc'teryx are another feature I REALLY appreciate. However, the Arc'teryx Women's Arakys Approach Shoe are way too narrow in the toe box for me, with no give from the rubber-like material. Back they go. Bummer!

Pretty comfortable

I've put it through the wringer

I used these for approach, trail running, running in winter on icy asphalt as well as for everyday casual use. They were pretty comfortable in all these conditions. However I don’t think this would be a good choice if you have Wide feet.

Surprisingly versatile.

I originally bought these shoes to be approach shoes, but now I also use them every time I travel. The collapsible heel is soooo convenient for going through TSA or for slipping on and off at rest stops on road trips. When I'm wearing them for approaches, I love the sticky Vibram sole and how breathable they are. The collapsible heel also makes this shoe great for cragging as it's really easy to switch between these and climbing shoes. The only thing this shoe is lacking is support. They're quite minimalist, which is great, but if you are looking for a shoe with extra support you won't find it in this shoe.
