Legendary protection for demanding alpine missions.

Improving upon the iconic protection of the Alpha SV Jacket, Arc'teryx focused on the seemingly contradictory design concepts of lightweight construction and robust strength, seeing as it's the favorite choice of 100-day skiers, professional mountain guides, and alpinists facing the worst conditions on the planet. The newest iteration of the Arc'teryx Men's Alpha SV Jacket leverages a 100-denier nylon face (what Arc'teryx calls N100p-X) over the previous 80-denier fabric for twice the abrasion-resistance and 50% more strength against tears. It retains the legendary waterproofing and breathability of a Gore-Tex Pro 3-layer membrane for those skiing and pushing peaks in exposed terrain and raging snowstorms.

This increase in strength comes with a slight weight penalty (approximately 2% increase) in the face fabric. Offsetting this minute increase, Arc'teryx decreases the jacket's overall weight with narrower 8mm Gore seam tape, eliminating zipper garages with the use of WaterTight zippers and RS sliders, as well as Cohaesive hem adjusters that replace the previous version's Harness HemLock insert. This obsessive focus on weight savings makes the Alpha SV a top contender for light-and-fast alpine missions where nasty weather is expected.

Besides saving precious weight, the Cohaesive hem adjuster offers a snug fit around the hip that prevents the jacket from riding up when you're wearing a climbing harness. WaterTight underarm zips provide active breathability while you're skinning up your favorite backcountry stash or embarking on a mixed route of demanding rock and ice. The StormHood accommodates skiing and climbing helmets while sealing out pouring rain and wind-driven snow. These features make the Alpha SV a veritable fortress against against the world's most demanding alpine environments, all without sacrificing functionality or storage like many lightweight jackets on the market.

    • Lightweight and tough jacket for demanding alpine missions
    • 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro guarantees waterproof, breathable protection
    • N100p-X face fabric reinforces jacket from tears and abrasion
    • 8mm Gore seam tape for less weight and extra breathability
    • WaterTight underarm zippers increase active ventilation
    • Cohaesive hem adjuster prevents riding up with climbing harness
    • Arc'teryx outerwear sits at the forefront of durability and alpine protection

    LOVE IT!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: xl
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 180lbs

This jacket seems to run true to size and the fit is amazing. I love the way it feels and preforms. I have skied in it a few times and have been very happy with it. The SV is meant for severe weather, so layer up below it and you will be warm and dry! Highly recommend to any that spends a lot of time out side in variable weather that need something durable.

Fall out shelter with high armpits

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'
    • Weight: 180lbs

I'm 6' 180lbs and wear a medium. I've owned three Arcteryx hard shells since 1999 -- Original Sidewinder (Medium); Tantalus (Medium). Both of my previous jackets were fantastic for their time. I purchased the SV last year because I had the opportunity to spend an extended period in the backcountry of the Wasatch. Although this jacket is not technically listed in the ski category, I have used it for backcountry skiing and resort skiing in primarily in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Wearing this jacket is like cheating the elements. When the hood is cinched down over my helmet, I feel like I'm watching the weather on a TV rather than actually being out in it. I wear it with an old pair of Alpha SV bibs in the worst conditions. I have no problem with moving or skiing aggressively.
I have noticed the high armpits in the Alpha SV jacket. Compared with the Tatantalus or the Rush, it is a slightly more form-fitting cut. If you haven't worn this jacket before, you will notice that the armpits are cut rather high. I've wondered if this was because the jacket might be specifically designed for climbing, in which case you would spend considerably more time with your arms overhead. In any case, I've become used to it and wouldn't trade it for anything.

    Really the Best

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I have compared with many others, this is the best. It keeps me dry and warm. It's relatively comfortable, I mean, for what it is. It fits fairly large almost like XL (I am medium/large), but it works well to allow multiple layers under and it does not feel too big so I think it is sized properly. The zippers are good and well placed to allow cooling and to manage pockets. The hood is good with a helmet but could be better to allow wearing without a helmet. Also the front part of the collar is great in cold/wet weather, but becomes quickly annoying when it warms up. It allows for good movement without uncovering when I have to extend my arms or look around.

    Awesome jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 160lbs

Literally this thing can withstand anything from heavy rain to blizzard.
Took this jacket to mt Shasta and performed very well.
This is an incredible piece of equipment-- well built, durable, and functional. I especially love the chest pockets and hood design, and the fabric is incredibly durable yet moves well and somehow nicely fits the gap between burly and lightweight.

Love it in (almost) every way.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 170lbs

It is a perfect shell in every way except one. The arm holes are a little tight in the pit area. They aren’t overly tight just a bit high up. There must be some functional design reason for this because EVERYTHING on this jacket is so well thought out. I really can’t believe how much technology and craft has gone into every panel, weld and zipper on this piece. I had my last one stolen and bit the bullett for another one despite the steep price. I just couldn’t go back to a lesser option. I am 5’9” inches and an athletic (not bulky) 170 lbs and the small fits well. I can even fit a small Cerium LT under it as a mid layer.

    Arc'teryx – Men's Alpha SV Jacket

The Alpha SV, an Arc’teryx icon repeatedly proven in severe alpine environments, is now stronger and lighter. Exceptionally durable waterproof, breathable N100p-X 3L GORE-TEX® Pro fabric significantly increases abrasion resistance. Optimized construction, WaterTight™ zippers with RS™ sliders, and minimized seams shed grams. Fully featured with a helmet compatible StormHood™, pit zips, and articulated construction, the Alpha SV remains the choice for extended use in the harshest conditions.

    Tough and lite

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 165lbs

This is my go to shell for when the weather takes a turn for the worst. I usually wear this shell while touring - a few things I find key are the 3 layer goretex membrane which keeps you dry in any condition, the lightweight which packs really well into my pack and doesn't break my back, and the durability of the 100D nylon used in this shell.

I am 5'9", 170lbs and got a medium which fits me perfectly even with heavy layering underneath.

    The PERFECT hardshell

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 154lbs

I work as a professional outdoor guide in the peruvian Andes. I spend a lot of time in the mountains and I always need reliable protection. Over the years, I have tried several models of rain jackets from good brands like TNF, Columbia, Patagonia, etc. Let me tell you this: Today ARC'TERYX makes the best hardshells in the world. I was introduced to Arcteryx when I purchased the lighter ALPHA FL and it's performance blew my mind.

After that first experience I decided to buy the ALPHA SV. A few days ago, while having lunch at 15,420ft (4,700 mts) we were hit by a sudden storm. As soon I put the ALPHA SV on I felt like was on a shelter. Later that same day, we got relentless hail, bittering cold winds and a heavy downpour. This jacket feels like wearing a 16th century armour. YES. It is that good. It makes you feel invulnerale. I never felt so much confidence wearing other jackets!. Besides the weather protection, I was impressed by the fact that DWR coating showed no signs of wearing off in the hips and the shoulders area. I can not say the same about my many other rain jackets.

Other features I like are the generous hood design and the many pockets. The hood can be optimally adjusted to be worn with a helmet or without it. The two front pockets are good for storing gps, compass, maps, snacks, radio, satellite phone, gloves etc. There are two extra internal pockets. The pit zips for ventilation also come handy for cooling down! This jacket features everything you need on a big day in the countryside. Every single detail is thoughfully designed and well executed. It is a perfect jacket! I never thought I would find one!

This piece was designed to be worn under "severe conditions", so it has plenty of room for layering up. When static, I can wear a base layer, a R1 fleece, a Nano Air and a Ghost Whisperer underneath easily and I felt like I could still add more layers! For reference I'm 5,8 ft and I weight 154 pounds (178 cms and 70kg). I wear a SMALL, like in other Arc'teryx garments. If you don't intend to wear so many layers underneath, you can probably size down. I feel like I could use the x-small too, but it just wouldn't provide enough space for layering up.

If you're heading to the most extreme environments on earth, you live in the end of the world or if you simply valorate the best equipment and want THE MOST PROTECTIVE hardshell in the market, this garment will be a welcome addition to your arsenal. It is expensive, but it will last you many years. I wish I had bought this piece before, instead of wasting my money with cheaper jackets. I will definetely buy again rain gear from ARC'TERYX.

This is not a simple rain jacket. It is as a critical survival piece. Just buy it! You will not regret!

SV lives up to its name

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 155lbs

Been needing a bombproof hard shell for a while now and finally decided to drop in on the Alpha SV. This thing definitely lives up to its reputation. Tough and durable face fabric that has a great feel to it. Fit is great and I sized a little larger so I could layer no problem. I'm typically between an M and L in jackets and went with the L in this one. So far, super happy with this. I'll come back to update as the winter moves along and I test this puppy out in more conditions.

    Damn Good

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 170lbs

This Jacket is sleek and fits well. The hood is probably my favorite part of it all and second is the fitted cut of the jacket.

    Pros: Hood is perfect; waterproof; breathable; armpit vents; draw-strings are superb;

Concerns (not Cons): Sleeves are a little baggy around the armpit, but not a major issue; a little noisy when moving around, but also not a huge issue.

    Five Stars Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'9"
    • Weight: 148lbs

This Alpha SV jacket which made in Canada. I have been visited at shop to feel this great quality. It looks different compared of other waterproof jackets with nothing to say.

    The gold standard

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 215lbs

    Worth the price.

@Jeff G. Hi Im 5'10" 230 Muscular upper body Im trying to figure out if the XL will work I have 2 other Arteryx Coats in XXL and their a bit Big but some people say this is form fitting and some say runs a little big?

    Great all-around jacket!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

"The Arcteryx Alpha SV is a great all around jacket. It was plenty warm in 30 degree weather with a base layer underneath, but is not too hot in 80 degree rainy weather with the pit zips open and a T-shirt underneath. The pockets on the chest is super convenient for phone, keys, etc. But keep in mind there are no side pockets like on normal jackets, so you have no place to put your hands. It is not too bulky to fold up and just shove in a backpack just in case. The fit is as expected for a hardshell. "

    What a BEAST!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 210lbs

Wow... this thing is such an amazing shell. I've had my Alpha FL for two years and it's the best piece of gear I've ever owned. Based on my initial impressions of the SV, it will be even more beloved. Such a stout jacket. Cannot imagine ever wearing it out. My SV (in Odysseus) is made in Canada (which my FL is not). Both are simply amazing and the Marmot, North Face, and Eddie Bauer shells in my closet will likely never be worn again. Would be like driving a Chevette and leaving my Ferraris parked in the garage (if I had any). My SV will be my winter/peak-bagging/ice climbing jacket, and the FL will continue to be my mountain biking and 3-season rain shell.
