Alpha FL Jacket

Lining up 12 pitches in a day is a serious endeavor, and while you'd prefer to do it in perfect weather, sometimes that's not just how things go, so you need an ultra-light rain shell like the Arc'teryx Alpha FL Men's Jacket. The lightest Gore-Tex Pro jacket that Arc'teryx makes, the FL (Fast and Light, if you were wondering) is the speed demon of the climbing-and-alpinism-oriented Alpha series, with a lightweight 3-layer design, waterproof and breathable membrane, and taped critical seams to keep you dry without any extra bulk.

Unlike average shells, the FL is designed specifically with climbers in mind. It has a trim fit to eliminate any extra material, and an e3D ergonomic design that's articulated in all the right places to facilitate climbing movements The slim profile also makes it easy to see your harness, so you don't waste time and energy trying to grab piece of gear from it, while the removable HemLock foam hem inserts keep your jacket from sliding up under your harness and leaving you exposed. The helmet-compatible StormHood adjust with a single-handed pull, and the entire package stuffs into the included stuff sack and clips onto your harness with a webbing loop, making it easy to carry and quickly accessible when the clouds gather.

  • Complete protection from the weather in a lightweight package
  • 3-layer Gore-Tex fabric provides breathable, waterproof defense
  • Harness-compatible design ensures you have full range of motion
  • Regular fit has room for layers without being too baggy
  • Helmet-compatible hood doesn't compromises safety in weather

Arcteryx FL products are all pretty similar—some smart functionality on a minimalist product that gets the job done. This jacket is no exception. I haven’t noticed any durability issues yet, but I’ve only had it out on the trails a few times. It is lightweight and breathable, the weather protection is what I expected, and the few features the coat does have are all important and easy to use, although it took me a few trips to get my hood adjusted properly. Other than the chest zip, the lack of pockets is really noticeable; I actually wanted pockets several times and had to use pants pockets or pockets in my under layers instead. Ultimately, if you’re trying to save weight on your gear, this jacket is great for what it does.

Great fit for me, just not durable.

I have had this for 2 years for a total of about 14 days of wear. (and no, I didn't go climb a rock with it) The fabric is great. the stitching is top notch and precise. the fit was great (for me at 170, athletic fit 5-9 in medium) It's just not durable.

I own this jacket in the women's version and the jacket comes in a variety of great colors and is advertised as a light weight shell. I wore the jacket for three hours underneath a backpack and my jacket had holes in it! This was not something I expected with the price. Unfortunately I was unable to get any warranty, and was told "it was unrepairable." I am super bummed.

Lightweight Alpinism

The Arc'teryx Alpha FL is Arc'teryx's lightest 3L GORE Pro jacket. For those of us that count every gram that goes into our kits when we venture into the backcountry Arc'teryx delivered an ultralight and ultra waterproof shell. This jacket removes most of the features found in other jackets and opts for weight savings and overall usability. If you want an ultralight alpine jacket won't hold you back take a look at the Alpha FL.

Swiss Army Jacket

This is my go-to for ice climbing, ski touring and as an emergency shell. It has a nice long cut which I like when I'm climbing and it wont come out the bottom of my harness. Its super simple, velcro cuffs and the hood and face coverage is amazing, especially with a helmet. I'm 5'11" and 155lbs and went with the MED. I'm super happy with the breath-ability and wind/rain protection. I'd only suggest the Alpha AR if you want a lot more thicker protection, but I use this shell more due to the need for both protection AND breath-ability.
