Alpha Composite Pant

Free-moving, breathable, and weather protective, the Arc'teryx Men's Alpha Comp Pant offers versatile performance for high-alpine adventurers. Gore Windstopper panels cover the seat, crotch, thighs, and lower legs with windproof and highly water-resistant protection, so you're covered when icy blasts of air bring along unexpected snow flurries. Fortius 1.0 softshell covers the waist, gusset, and back of each leg with stretchy air permeability to keep your temperature regulated during grueling ascents.

You've got an integrated webbing belt and adjustable cuffs for a secure fit, as well as a two-position lower leg gusset. Close it snug for crampons, and open it up for ski boots to give yourself versatile performance for your all-encompassing alpine adventures. Adjustable hems with Keprotec reinforcements ensure that your crampons don't cut up the lower legs as you trek up frozen peaks, and the zippered thigh pocket features an internal anchor loop to securely hold your beacon.

I SO wanted to like these. An ice climbing friend has an older version, and they seemed near-perfect for winter ice: the durability, breathability, and stretch of softshell with a bit of extra wind/water resistance where needed. The new version seems to have trouble deciding if it's softshell or an actual shell pant. There's a lot more Gore-Tex and the earlier version, and it IS Gore-Tex, not just Windstopper - at least that's what the Arc'teryx website says. There's only one pocket, a decent thigh pocket but still - only one pocket. The stretch/woven fabric, where it exists, didn't feel confidence-inspiring: not that tough. Overall I came away concerned about how these would survive the abuse of ice climbing, bushwhacking, etc, and I returned them. Which is a shame, because the extra wind resistance can be really welcome at times. The fit is interesting. As noted, I'm a big guy, and I ordered in both a L and XL. To my surprise, the L was a better fit. With a Powerstretch tight beneath, the size L felt rather...snug. There's relatively little softshell fabric, not a lot of stretch, and yet.. I could high-step on the back of my couch and felt very little resistance from the legs. That's all down to really good cut. I may have to revisit these

Wore these pants during our push up to the summit of Amadablam very sturdy, the Grivel crampons did not punctured holes. Now I did wear one base layer, an around 6,400 did put on down pants over them, however I never felt being cold, it was just a precaution.

Good Overall Pant, Not Best for Cold

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

True to size

I purchased a medium, and the fit was true to size. The cuffs fits nicely over boots and are reinforced in appropriate areas. The legs flex well and allow a comfortable range of motion. While the pants are light and breath well, I would probably not rely on them in a very cold environment. The leg pocket was functional with easy access while wearing a harness. These pants provided good protection from plenty of wet snow and rain.

So Nice!

These pants have such a great range of motion that make my ice climbing days that much better. The reinforced cuff seems very durable to deflect the inevitable crampon scrape. I've used the pants on a full day of ice climbing and a couple days of ski touring. It's been a great pant for these higher aerobic output activities.

Nice material, strange fit

The appeal is minimalistic design/features. The flaw is this extra bit of material between the waist and the seat that created a bubble that made an awkward fit and feel. Returned without using.

decent, but definitely not my favorite

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Fit:
Runs large

These aren't the most durable or insulating pants I've used - they are light, but I'd want something at least a little more substantive for the price. The other problem is that these pants seem to be cut really long... since they don't have an inseam choice, I think they cut it long for versatility, but really it's just annoying.

I have used these pants several times now and overall i enjoy them. THe combo hard/ soft shell construction is very versatile, protection of the Gore Pro Shell in areas where you need it, seat, and front of the legs. WHile the soft shell lets your legs breath and not work up a sweat. I have used them rock climbing, skiing, and alpine climbing so far. My only dislikes is the pocket, and they are not great in cold weather, you really need a warm base layer in colder temps. I have some concerns with the durability of the soft shell fabric as it feels pretty thin.. time will tell. Over all I am happy with my purchase and would likely buy them again. * I am a gore mountain tech and periodically submit reviews on gore products.

Great pants, poor pocket

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

True to size

I love these pants. They have the quality I've come to expect from Arc'tyrex. They are light, very comfortable and they are very flexible. Coming down I was in a lot of sun, they didn't get hot or wet. These really should get 5 stars but the pocket location is not good. If you put anything with any weight in it constantly hits your knee. The bottom of the pocket needs to come up 2 or 3 inches.

Good pant for winter mountaineering

True to size

Just bought it for my Mount Washington ascent in February. Fits good with my mountaineering boots. I'm 5,8'' 175 lbs with 33/34 waist. The size M fits perfectly. A nice base layer bottom underneath the pant is enough for most cold weather situations.
