Comfortable BUT not durable or sticky
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I bought these shoes < 6 months ago. PROS: They are more comfortable than other approach shoes I've owned mostly because of the wide toe box and the fact that they feel more like flat trail runners than a stiff climbing shoe. I've worn these are my hiking shoe in the Sierras. CONS: For a shoe that is meant to be used outdoors they are completely destroyed in only a few months. The sole is delaminating, sides are blown out, and heel loop torn off. They also really don't climb well. The sole is super flexible (like a running shoe) so edging it difficult. The sticky rubber is better than say a set of Merrells but not actually sticky rubber.

I love the look of this shoe and I'm using it as an every day casual shoe. I really only have one complaint and that is there are no tongue keepers. Honestly, why? The tongue is constantly sliding around to the outside of my foot. After about a month of wear, everything looks good. Very lightweight with a flexible thin sole. You can feel rocks through the sole. The heal loop is nice and large and easy to get a finger in when putting the shoe on. I based the size on the Altra trail shoes I owe and they fit perfect.

My first pair of Altras and sent them back after three days. Size was spot on, they seemed comfortable in the house and they looked good. (If I wound up keeping these I’d be curious to how long they would have lasted, seemed like it wouldn’t be that long) But once I got walking in them they just tore my feet up. I’m 44yrs old and I have never had a pair of shoes hurt the way these did. Because of the very light fabric, and zero padding up around the ankles, the collar on both feet just dug into the bone underneath my ankles. I’ve never felt anything like this before. I’ve got normal feet, nothing strange about them, but just look at the shoe, the height of where your ankle is on these shoes and the height of the collar just don’t make sense. It literally felt like there was a wire digging into the outside of both of my feet directly under my ankle bones. I added inserts but it didn’t help. I put about 15mi on them in the three days and had to wear flip flops after that because my feet were so bad. Everyone else seems to love these, I seriously can’t see how unless I got some defective model. I wound up switching them out for the Altra Graftons which are awesome. A little bulkier than the wahweap. Graftons fit great, feel great and look great. 30mi in on them and zero problems.

I really like Altra running shoes so I was excited to see that they make an approach shoe. Bought this and wear it nearly every day. I haven't done much rugged hiking with them and they are already falling apart. The Liner is partially detached from the structural part of the shoe. The toe rubber is coming detached in several spots. The foot beds ride up the heel. They also run quite large for the size. My last pair of similar shoes were Evolves and I'll be going back to those in the future.

I got the Wahweap as a gift for a friend and this is what he thinks - "The Wahweap are a really sharp looking pair of shoes - great for around town or in a more casual work environment. I have yet to use them for hiking or for other activities where performance is important, however, I get the sense they are best left to casual activities"

Finally, I don't have to wear heavy boots to have a stiff sole. I have hallux limitus in my left large toe, having a stiff sole shoe reduces the wear and tear on that joint. It's been very difficult finding footwear that is stiff but doesn't feel like wearing bricks when walking. The wide toe box of Altra footwear is helpful too. I never realized how poorly I was treating my feet until I switched to Altras. They have allowed my feet to spread out, and I now can't fit into most of my old shoes and boots. I had been cramming my feet into narrow spaces my whole life. I have little to no pain in my feet at the end of the day when I wear Altras. I also have the Lone Peak Mid 4 which I recommend. I bought these to wear on a more casual basis and prolong the life of my Mid 4 running shoes. I typically wear 13, but in both altra shoes, I wear a 14.

When looking for a shoe to do it all for any adventure, this is the one! I was able to take this shoe on a bunch of trips to wear to work, out to dinner, hiking around, camping, and moving from place to place. The shoe is super lightweight, comfortable, and most importantly packable. The Footshape and balanced cushion have allowed for most of the feet and knee issues to go away. You will never go back and won't need another shoe after slipping your feet into these.

Really happy with this casual/adventure hybrid. Great fit and surprisingly versatile. The rubber outsole is grippy and the toe and heel cap adds a bit of durability. It’s super packable and great to travel with.
