Ultra comfortable shoe with durability issue
The Altra Vanish Carbon running shoe is an incredible performer in terms of comfort and speed. From the first wear, it feels lightweight and fast. The cushioning is just right, providing a thick yet responsive feel that makes walking a delight. However, despite the amazing fit and performance, I can't fully recommend this shoe. Unfortunately, the durability of the sole is a significant issue. After less than 100 miles of walking over just one month, the sole started to fall apart. For a premium running shoe, I expected it to last much longer, especially considering Altra's strong reputation. While the comfort and speed are top-tier, the lack of durability is disappointing and undermines the value of the shoe. If Altra improves the durability, this shoe would be a top contender for anyone looking for a fast, comfortable option. But until then, it's hard to justify the purchase for long-term use.

Do not recommend
This shoe looks nice. Feels good for the most part. Feels fast too. Thats about all the pro's though. I have less than 50 miles in this shoe and it's starting to fall apart. The sole of the shoe has already gone through the first layer. Even the toes of the shoes are becoming oddly scuffed. This shoe wont even last 100 miles. Ive never had a shoe break down with less than 200 miles. The laces are very bad too. They are kind of oddly thick like some dress shoes have. A double knot is a must. But the laces are so short, it's hard to double knot them. The tongue has zero structure to it and constantly slips down too far or down the side of your foot. So this shoe being about 200 bucks is unacceptable. I got them as a birthday gift in later June and I'm already having to look into new shoes. Very disappointing.

I will most likely buy another pair of these!
Forefoot cushioning is amazing! The built in roll of the front of the sole is very noticeable and definitely reminds me to keep that toe push-off engaged. The outer material is very soft and breathable. The tongue is nice and long enough to sit higher than the top laces. The laces snug up very comfortable and keep the shoe tight to my foot without pinching or creating hot spots. I really like the responsiveness for such a light weight. They feel like I can motate at the pace i could do a few years ago. Honestly though, I'm not sure I've been able to detect the presence of the carbon plate embedded? Maybe just enough gimmick to get me to buy them? It worked. I would probably buy them again even if they took the carbon plate out. They are really comfortable. My only real complaint (and it may make me rethink buying them again) are the laces. They are too long by about 1.5-2" on each end even with the last holes looped for heel cinching. The real beef is they constantly come loose. I've pull the bow as tight as I can, I've double knotted and they still work loose. The only good thing about being too long is triple knotting is about what it takes to keep them from tripping me on my face. Come on Altra, hire someone to check out the laces before sending your shoes out into the world!

Hitting PR's
This is my first foray into a carbon shoe. They lived up to the reviews. They feel great and have definitely saved my legs. They're do run small.

A fast shoe that keep your legs fresh
I just ran a half marathon PB in these shoes. This was my first race in carbon shoes and what a difference. Despite running seriously negative splits with a 300ft hill in mile 10, my legs had that extra bit of "oomph" to finish strong at the end. I am a heavier runner (about 225 lbs) and I do not have any signs of the accelerated wear and tear that other runners have experienced with the outsole. Overall, a great shoe. I'm looking forward to running a full marathon in them in June!

I really wanted to love this shoe
Been an Altra fan for many years, and I was so excited about this carbon shoe. The fit was great and super light. However, it doesn't hold up. I broke in the shoe with a few long runs and save these for races. Maybe 80-90 miles, and they are done. The bottom has worn way down, and it doesn't have the same spring that it originally did. The cost isn't worth it. I run daily with my other Altras, and they will last a lot longer.

Great shoe overall, wish it came in different widths
Many people writing reviews complaining about the shoe seem to misunderstand what this product is for. Most of the complaints are about durability. But this shoe isn't a daily trainer, it's a racing shoe. This shoe sacrifices durability so that it can decrease weight and help you run faster. There's no reason to make those major sacrifices on any day other than race day, buy different shoe for your speed workouts. Now on to the actual review. The shoe overall is fantastic. I wore it for a few speed workouts and one long run before my race to acclimate to the shoe. The shoe felt a little awkward during the first few runs, and I had to adjust my stride a little bit; but I got used to it after a couple of runs. I found it to be difficult to get the tension right on the shoelaces at first, and would usually have to adjust it a couple times. But, because of those practice runs with it I got used to it, and by race day I was able to tie them comfortably and didn't have to adjust during the race, The upper is nice and breathable, the shoe is light, and it feels snappy. The shoe definitely feels like it "wants" you to move. Slightly lifting your heels causes the shoe to rock up and send you moving forward. This shoe is definitely my favorite shoe that I've ever raced in. I am however disappointed that it only comes in Altras slim fit. I strongly prefer Altra's standard fit, especially when running a marathon, and hope they consider making both options available for their next iteration.

disappointed
I wear mostly original foot shape they fit the best, sadly I have to feel a bit of discomfort by purchasing a standard foot shape shoe for road running. I feel as though I would never experience the higher end shoes like the vanish carbon because of its slim fit shape. I am slowly start to move away from Altra because shoes choices are limited by foot shapes.

Disappointed..
I tried these on at an expo and they recommended going a half size up since I have a wider feet. Used this shoe for Chicago Marathon. I did a quick tempo run before the race and it felt light, surprisedly soft and fast. I ran the Chicago Marathon and everything felt good until halfway in where I can feel my feet jamming up against the shoe that it really started to hurt the rest of the race. Ended up with bruised toenails. Never had this issue with Altras and I ran the Escalate and the racer version at marathon distance before with no pain. I wouldn't recommend for anyone with wide feet going marathon distance. It will be good for half marathons and under which I will be using the shoe for.

60mile shoe
Good tempo shoe but has a shelf life of 60-80miles. Was recently gifted a pair and ran through them in 2 weeks. My adios Pro3 lasted me 300miles before I had to get a new pair. This shoe isn't up to par yet with the other super shoes. Unless you get a big discount or sponsored- these are a waste of money for the price.
