    Superior 4.0 Trail Running Shoe

The updated Superior 4.0 Trail Running Shoe is now the lightest trail running shoe in the Altra line up. Weighing in at a full two ounces less than last season's model, the Superior 4.0 shed weight with the newly designed, wrap-around seamless upper that provides support and breathability for your trail runs. Its updated midsole, the new Altra Quantic, also sheds weight while also providing you with a responsive and cushioned ride. Additionally, a removable StoneGuard can be inserted for the more technical trails and the rounded heel adds support so you can fly down the trails with confidence. Classic Altra features are also present in the Superior including the FootShape toe box for a natural toe splay and a ZeroDrop Platform to encourage proper, low-impact form for happy joints throughout your trail run.

    • Altra's lightest trail running shoe for fast and light missions

    Perfect All Around!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love these trail shoes in every way! They have performed really well in a variety of environments. I have worn them on trails full of scree, in the rain on slick and muddy surfaces, and on regular rocky trails. I have loved them on everything!! They are true to size, but Altra recommends sizing up half a size for the best fit. I got 1/2 a size bigger than normal and they fit really well, plenty of room without being too big.

They are super comfortable. They have minimal padding but come with a stone guard insert that I have found to be super helpful on rocky trails. I haven't had any issues with comfort and I like the minimal design. I didn't want a super bulky trail shoe and like how light they are.

They also have bomb grip! I was a little concerned, because I have had previous trail shoes that didn't hold up. That has not been an issue with these! They have awesome grip, and can grip on all kinds of terrain. I have worn them on a variety of runs and they perform really well.

They are also just really cute, I love the color options and that they have a mountain design on the side. I HIGHLY recommend if you are in the market for new shoes! Plus Altra is a great brand and their shoes are the comfiest trail shoes I have ever worn.

I want to love but ...

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These were my first pair of Altras, and while they are super comfortable in general, I don't think these are great for what I bought them for. It could be because I'm not used to a more minimalist shoe, but even after almost 60 miles in these I still can't love them.

After my first big day in the mountains with these (12 miles, 7800 feet of gain, lots of scree), there are already small tears in the upper. They have virtually no midfoot support, and the upper is so thin and stretchy that my foot slides around if the trails are uneven. Even on non-technical trails, I feel that I'm lacking support and protection, especially on the descent.

I love Altra's fit philosophy, so I bought a pair of their road runners and they fit much better. I'm testing out the Timp 1.5 because it's supposed to be a beefier, more supportive shoe.

    Amazing upgrades to the Superior!

There are so many things I'm loving about the Superior 4.0. Altra made some huge upgrades to the Superior I'm so excited about. The biggest is the Quantic midsole, which is softer but still responsive enough to hit trail races and hilly speed workouts with ease. The upper also got an overhaul, and ditched the stitching for a fully engineered design. I'm in love with this new Superior and it's now my go-to daily trainer and racer!
