    Superior 4.0 Trail Running Shoe

Go faster on the trail with the Altra Superior 4.0 Trail Running Shoe. The newest version of this lightweight trail shoe has gotten even lighter, and hasn't sacrificed any performance in doing so. The upper has been completely redesigned in a wrap-around style for a snug and supportive fit, and the new lighter-weight midsole features Altra's Quantic foam for cushioned comfort and support on your long trail excursions.

For trail-specific features you've got ultra-grippy MaxTrac rubber on the outsole, along with a redesigned lug pattern for uncompromising traction on all the variable surfaces you'll be zipping over. There's also a protective underfoot rock plate that keeps your feet guarded from sharp rocks and roots, and removes easily if you're trying to lighten the weight on mellower terrain. A hook-and-loop attachment tab lets you easily attach a compatible ankle gaiter to keep trail debris from sneaking in your shoe. You've got all that plus Altra's foot-forward design, featuring a Zero Drop platform for a healthy stride and a Footshape toe box that lets your toes splay out naturally for a healthier foot motion and better ground control on the trail.

    • Lightweight trail shoe for speedy runs on rugged terrain
    • Redesigned upper wraps around the foot for security and support
    • Quantic midsole offers comfortable cushioning at a low weight

    Great shoe!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    Fit:Runs large
    Size Bought9.5
    Height5` 8"
    Weight163 lbs

This is my sixth pair of Altra's and my fourth pair of Superior's. Not all of them were great but I really like this generation of the Superior. It is lighter than the previous two models and has a lot let clutter. They also got ride of the "flapper thing" on the heel that I never saw the purpose of. I downsized this model of Superiors because I noticed that the shoe was growing with each model and my Superior 3 was about a half size bigger than my Superior 2. These shoes fit your feet like socks and the sewn in tongue is really a smart decision by Altra. The material of the shoe is more durable than previous models and holds up to rocks and roots. The sole is holding up nicely and I've put a few hundred trail miles on this current pair. I did trim the laces down because they were a bit long, but other than that this shoe is great.

    Great Update!

    Familiarity:I've used it several times
    Fit:True to size
    Height6` 2"
    Weight180 lbs

This will be my third pair of Altra's, with this update being one of the best, adding features that greatly aid in the run or hike. One of my favorite new additions, is that the tongue is completely sewn into the upper on one side; meaning that it does not move around at all through-out the run. One of my pet peeves is when a tongue moves around or bunches up while using the shoe; and this totall elimantes that. The front of the shoe seems a bit more burly, with the toe guard being quite tough and I have hit it a number of times on rocks and trees. I would also advise on putting the rock guard in as the soles are a bit soft without it, and a sharp rock can be easily felt. The mid-sole has been supportive but also supply at the same time without being to soft. Overall this is an amazing update and I would suggest Altra's to anyone looking for an essential minimalist shoe.

Plastic cuff inside the toe box cuts through the top fabric eventually making them unusable. This has happened to multiple pairs of my 4.0's and they are unfortunately past 30 days now. The superior 3.0 seems to be the best model so far for that line up. The 4.0's are much thinner and less rugged. The sole pancakes much more than earlier models.

    Altra's comfiest trail shoe yet!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    Fit:True to size

There are so many things I'm loving about the Superior 4.0. Altra made some huge upgrades to the Superior I'm so excited about. The biggest is the Quantic midsole, which is softer but still responsive enough to hit trail races and hilly speed workouts with ease. The upper also got an overhaul, and ditched the stitching for a fully engineered design. I'm in love with this new Superior and it's now my go-to daily trainer and racer!

Thanks for a great review, Jimmy. Awesome picture!
