    Superior Performance.

If your cup of tea entails a pre-dawn cruise through the local trail system, then the Altra Men's Superior 3.0 Trail Running Shoe might just be the complementary creamer to your earl grey. Incidentally enough, the designers at Altra listened to your feedback about the Superior 2.0 and outfitted the 3.0 with a series of improvements. To start, the Superior 3.0 now features accurate sizing, structural overlays in the upper, and a subtle flare on the outsole lugs to maintain traction.

In dependable Altra fashion, the Superior features a Zero Drop platform that places your heel and forefoot at the same distance for a natural stride. An A-Bound midsole includes EVA foam for the right amount of lightweight cushion and energy rebound with a low profile and not a lot of bulk. InnerFlex grooves provide flexibility in the midsole for better grip with every step, and Altra added a Contour footbed for extra cushioning. There's also a removable StoneGuard insole that provides lightweight protection from sharp rocks when you're boulder hopping or surfing your way down loose scree fields.

The Superior 3.0 features Altra's TrailClaw sole, which models sticky rubber after your foot's bones and tendons to give natural flex and targeted support in key areas. The famous FootShape toe box lets your toes spread out naturally to ensure stability on rugged terrain. Up top, Altra equipped the Superior 3.0 with a quick-drying and durable Air Mesh upper to ventilate and keep your foot cool, and it finished the Superior off with its Gaiter Trap, which lets you securely attach gaiters to the shoe without having to wrap them under your sole.

    Great all around shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 9 Mens
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 175lbs

I'll admit, I didn't buy these to run in. If I did, I think they would be a great shoe for that purpose. I did buy them to wear on a regular basis, as I wanted a comfortable, light and breathable shoe over my standard collection of Keen's or Scarpa type casual shoe. So far, they have been great. They're easy on the feet at my stand up desk at work, and other daily activities. I've used other minimalist zero drop shoes for running, and these fit and feel on par with those with a little more cushion on the sole. One aspect I liked was the addition of a very thin "rock guard" insert that can be used to minimize feeling rocks through the sole. I have not used this, but thought it was a great touch as that was my biggest gripe with previous minimalist zero drop shoes. I ordered my normal street shoe size, and these fit spot on.

    Gifting for the win

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I got these for a friend who suffers from bunions and I wear Altra to run so I wanted him to try these since they have a wide toe box. He loved them! They don't push his toes and knuckles like typical shoe brands. He uses them for everyday wear and especially loves them when he's weight lifting in the gym. I got him the Superior since I knew he was a gym rat and wanted less cushioning. If you're a fan of cushioning and a thicker sole then go with the Lone Peak, Olympus, or Timp models that Altra sells. I also had him size up half a size for his runs so his toes don't touch the front of the shoe when he goes downhill since he was losing toenails from past shoes/boots.

    Great so far!

I have a difficult foot, that is very wide and high volume. I have been wearing Chacos as my hiking footwear for the past two years, and they have been phenomenal. However this fall I wanted something with a little more warmth/protection/tread than my Chacos. This was my first purchase of closed toed shoes in over two years, and I was skeptical that they would work, however I was able to get my foot in and was surprised that my forefoot was not being crushed. The footshape toebox does wonders for my toes, but the extra width doesn't extend that far back. I have the laces about as loose as they will go, and I am comfortable. I think that once the insole packs down and breaks in I will have even more room. I went hiking in them yesterday and the aggressive tread was perfect for the mud and snow I encountered on the way. The construction of the shoe is very good, and I expect them to last a long time. Overall these are a great piece and a sturdy alternative to sandals, while still being a lightweight minimalist shoe.

    Excellent shoe!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my second pair of Superior 3.0 and my fourth pair of Altra's. I really like how they have fixed the baggy heel and tighten up the shoe over all. I have no problem with heel slippage or the shoe rolling on off camber trails. I use it for 90% trail running but it does ok on pavement as well. Having room for my toes to splay really gives me control and more balance on ruff trails. I will definitely be buying this shoe again.

Where's the 11.5 size? And is the blue/black color scheme coming soon? Thanks!
