The answer for the runner who CrossFits
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: 8.0 M
- Height: 5'6"
- Weight: 135lbs
After retiring a trusted pair of UA training shoes I purchased without knowing the model name I was left in a bind to find a suitable replacement without breaking the bank.
My search took me to the usual contenders- Reebok, Nike, No Bull, Adidas (Crazytrain). None of them had the fit warranting the premium price tag, Worse yet, none of them were shoes I wished to run more than 100m in let alone intervals at any appreciable distance, so I kept looking.
I was thrilled to learn Altra makes a dedicated HIIT shoe. But this caught my eye because of its minimalist design and performance claims. Could this be the answer for the runner who also CrossFits?
Right out of the box I felt that all too familiar and welcome fit and feel of Altra. The uppers wrap nicely around my foot without pinching or pressure points anywhere and the room in the toe box is generous, but not so much as to feel sloppy. Great fit all around, really. And so light!
Once the action gets under way at the box I noticed just how comfortable they are. They have just the right amount of cushioning and protection to guard against impact from jumps and fast changes in direction. And when the action moved out doors they performed like a great pair of running flats- outstanding!!!
Where they fall short is in the heel for heavy lift days. Unlike, true HIIT shoes, I found the support in the heel a bit on the minimal side. This was surprising and very noticeable at first. Only because my last pair held my heel so firmly the shoe was doing all the work. It took me a little bit to learn how to leverage the zero drop sole to my advantage and let the muscles in my foot do the work naturally. I'm very pleased to say it's not even an issue for me any longer. What a great purchase! If these feel this good I'm willing to invest in their HIIT model to have just for heavy lift days. Such a great purchase!
