Your mythology is a bit rusty, but you're pretty sure Zeus became king of the gods by winning a 50k up Mount Olympus, and Hercules only came down to earth to thru-hike the AT. You don't need to be an all-powerful being to get all powerful trail performance with the Altra Olympus Trail Running Shoe. Redesigned to give you more support and traction on any trail, the Olympus 3 is a trusted go-to for ultrarunners and thru-hikers alike.
New to the Olympus is a redesigned upper, built with minimal seams to be more breathable and resistant to everyday trail abrasion. The midsole is now more responsive and allows for a greater natural flex, promoting a more efficient and speedy stride. A Vibram MegaGrip outsole provides durable grip on dusty switchbacks and slippery climbs. It's also been widened at the heel for increased stability on long and rugged runs. A hook and loop tab at the heel easily attaches to gaiters to keep trail debris from sneaking in.
For the rest of the shoe, you've got all of Altra's innovative technology working to keep your foot healthy and your performance high. A FootShape toe box helps your toes to spread naturally while keeping your big toe in a straight position for more stability and power. And like all of Altra's shoes, the Olympus 3 comes with 0mm drop for a natural and low-impact stride, so you can go further in comfort.

Max Cushion and Max Grip
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: 8.5
- Height: 5'7"
- Weight: 165lbs
I have worn Altra shoes (multiple models, road and trail) since the company launched and they continue to progress their technology and design. The Olympus is Altra's maximally cushioned shoe and I find that I can roll right over virtually anything on the trail without anything poking into the sole of my foot and with good stability. I was concerned that the stack height might make them a bit wobbly, but they are quite stable. The Vibram Megagrip outsole is the the absolute greatest thing ever - think climbing shoe sticky rubber on a trail shoe. I can't stress enough how much of a game changer the grip is. My only complaints are that the laces are comically long and the toe cap seems to peel off pretty easily from stubbing toes on roots or rocks. This is not a significant enough issue that I would not purchase another pair, but I would expect better quality. I noted that the shoe fits true to size, and that is correct; however, if you have other Altra shoes do not assume they will be the same. I wear a different size Altra across three models (this is an issue the company struggles with across products).

These are my 1st pair of Trail shoes and I didn't go wrong with my purchase. I got these with the intention to run my 1st 100K race. I still haven't but, I'm training on them and they are comfortable. The other day I ran with them on a muddy trail and although it was slippery. Once I got on a part of the trail where it wasn't muddy. The mud would sling right off. That was awesome. I might just use them for my OCR's. Unless I find some other Altra OCR shoes.
Perfect cushion for long distance trails
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
My dad uses these for his ultra races. He recently ran the Leadville 100 and San Diego 100 races in 2 pairs of these. He swaps them out on rotation. These are the best cushion for his old man joints. He goes up a half size to prevent loss of toenails. Altra's have their formula dialed in for zero drop running. If you haven't made the switch yet then you should definitely consider giving them a try. My dad gets these on repeat!
