Why We Like The Escalante 3 Running Shoe

With a new low-profile look but the same roomy toe box we love, Altra's Escalante 3 takes us beyond our daily miles. The stretchy knit upper gives our feet a soft hug that lets them move and breathe with ease on our morning run and looks streamlined with slacks for our workday commute. However we're striding, the grooved midsole and FootPod tech enhance flexibility for smooth rolling transitions.

Bring back the old escalante

Like seemingly every long time escalante user, I am disappointed to see each iteration get farther from what originally made these shoes great. I wish I could find older models in my size still because I would buy as many pairs as I could find before things get even worse.

Painful fit. Not an Escalante.

I love the classic Escalante. This isn't it. This pair was immediately painful and I had to go back to using my old, worn-down pair (which are still much more comfortable than the new pair). It doesn't appear that Altra is offering good alternative. Really disappointed with this shoe and with Altra's current offering in general.

Why don't they listen to customers

So I have used Altra for a long time now. Escalante are my go to, but it seems like with every year they are trying to be more like Hoka. If I wanted Hoka then I would buy Hoka. I loved the old lower stack height, the thin and lightweight tongue, and just the feel of the older shoes. I'd still be running in my Escalante 2.5 if I could, but 700 miles wears down the tread. The best thing about the 3 is that the tread is not worn down since they're new! I have about 300 miles on them now and the wear seems to be the same as past models. The tongue is so bulky and forces you to tie super tight to feel secure, when in reality it just puts pressure on specific points of your foot causing the tongue to bulk out between the laces and cause pinpoint pain. This not only looks bad, but is super uncomfortable. The old thin tongue of shoes past was lightweight, breathable, and allowed you to tie the laces evenly, not too tight, but feel secure. My biggest gripe is the stack height. Why does it increas every year? Hoka sells well because they're comfy, but not great for foot muscle usage. I want a low cushion, low stack shoe that allows my foot to do the work. My foot needs the workout, not a shoe. Just because something sells well doesn't mean that it is good for you. Quit following trends and do what Altra did before they sold out to a bigger company. I will be forced to choose a different brand since there is no stack heights less than 25mm other than speed shoes (which are now even getting the stack height increase, smh). Please be yourself, Altra. Don't try to copy other brands. There was so much potential it's origination, but it seems to be a sellout company. Hopefully my mind can be changed in the future. Seems half-size big only because of nice wide toe box.

Energy zappers

Unlike many others' reviews, I didn't mind the alterations to the construction of the shoe as much as I have not liked the sole/foam. Every time I run in these (just hit 300 miles in the shoe, I'm < 150 pounds) I notice I'm working much harder than when I'm running in the Torin 7's or the Escalante Racers and my legs feel fatigued. This is only exacerbated when they get wet running in the rain. If the response to this is 'well, 300 miles - you're nearing the end of the shoe's life,' then my review changes to this being a total durability issue. A shoe at this price with my weight should last through 400+.

A glorious return to running assisted by the Altra Escalante

Can again run long distances with minimal chronic knee or shin pain (previously an issue with over-cushioned Brooks shoes). Zero-drop is a game changer. About 200 miles in and no sign of wear at all.

This can do it all! Excellent.

I went to try on a few shoes and I knew the second I slipped the Escalante on that I had to have them. They feel responsive and can handle anything from a short tempo run to a marathon. Excellent.

I have every color.

I have plantar fasciitis and the Escalante 3 has been the best shoe at alleviating the pain and discomfort - no inserts or braces needed.

Insides Falling Apart after 24 miles

I've been a long time Altra customer but I'm very disappointed with the build of the escalante 3s. Inside both shoes, near the toe cap, the insides have begun peeling apart after only 24 miles.

My second favorite Escalante

I have these for all my runs right now. For me, the 2& 2.5 versions were a bit narrow. Nice room in the 3.0. Downside: the stack height is getting a bit think. Can't beat the originals!
