    Good for Car Camping

We have used these for car camping a few times. They seem to work well but 3 inches is a bit of a stretch for what they advertise. I would say it is closer to 2 inches.
Would not use for backpacking. They are big and kind of heavy. They are great for car camping.

      What am I missing?

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I don't understand how these have such great reviews... we have gone through 2 sets (one being a replacement) and both times, the valves stopped working; making it impossible to roll them up / for them to keep air. They are very comfortable, but also pretty heavy.

Great quality, Too big for backpacking

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Really impressed with the construction quality of these sleeping pads. They seem like they will hold up for a long time. They are easily big enough to accommodate two people with room to spare, however they seem a little to large/heavy to truly use for backpacking.

      Great Pad

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a fantastic pad if weight/size aren't an issue for your camping trip. I would be hesitant to take on a backpacking trip, just due to them not packing down the smallest. I use these when camping at music festivals. The double size is plenty big enough to fit 2 people and the seam in the middle is hardly noticeable. I am 6'3" 205# and my shoulders/hips do not hit the ground like they did with my 1980's era Therm-A-Rest. The pads self inflate relatively quick and with a few top-off breaths, is ready to use! Pad deflates quickly with the 2 valves. I would highly recommend this double pad over more expensive double pads without a seam.

Good for glamping, not much else

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

These are much heavier than I thought they would be. They also don't pack down very well so they become another piece of luggage on a hike to a camping spot. Good for glamping or when a walk isn't necessary.

      Short lived

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We're a car camping brood of 4 and we make roughly a half dozen trips a year to various state parks around MD. When we got these, it was love at first sleep! But two years of use later and they've developed a sagging issue where they will no longer stay 'inflated' through out the night. We even stored these unrolled thinking that doing so would help them last a good long while. Maybe this is a typical amount of use before pads like these wear out, I can't say, we don't have experience with other pads. But now that the shine has worn off, we no longer unreservedly recommend these and are undecided whether we'll buy a new set. Then again, it's easy to set your expectations too high with the first pad you sleep with. And maybe that's all this is. So set your expectations accordingly.

Awesome sleeping pad for car/van camping

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This sleeping pad is great if you are looking for a comfortable car/van camping pad for you and your partner. I got this because we had a memory foam pad to go over our slightly uncomfortable van bed which was great, but it took up wayyyyy too much storage space. These pads are just as thick and comfortable but compress MUCH smaller, leaving us more space for gear. Works great for it's purpose but this pad is pretty heavy so I would not recommend it for tent camping or backpacking.

      Great for winter car camping

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Tried this in winter camping on top of snow and ice. Definitely kept us warm and cozy and very comfortable. I did have trouble since the tent was pitched on slightly unlevel ground. Throughout the night thee sleeping bag was sliding on the sleeping pad. I did read online to try lying down some carpet gripper between the bag and the pad which I will have to try next time. Overall a great addition for adding comfort to car camping.

      This Mattress Simply Works!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We bought 2 of these for our cross-country road trip to go along with our pop-up cabin tent. Every night we were ready to sleep in less than 10 minutes from car to camp-ready. And packing up was a breeze as well. Let them unroll, blow 5 - 10 breaths into them to firm them to your liking, close the valves, velcro them together, throw a double bag on top, and presto! Sleep in comfort, on gravel, hard dirt, pine needles, slightly rocky soil, it doesn't matter.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is definitely needed for any camping adventure. You won't be disappointed, as the comfort of the pad keeps you from getting a restless sleep while you are out in the elements. Wake up and feel refreshed with this pad so you can go hard at it the next morning.

      Great for intended purpose

We bought this product for a recent road trip my wife and I went on. We decided to forgo hotels and camp instead traveling to and from of our destination. Not once did we have a restless night, we slept wonderful. I highly recommend you follow the instructions before your first use so that you get maximum expansion out of your pads. My wife and I are side sleepers, so we puff a few extra breaths of air into them and be fine. We even slept on rocky terrain on the side of the Rio grande gorge and we're just as comfortable as could be. While in Colorado at our friends home we slept on them on the floor instead of the couch. I highly recommend them for any kind of camping other than backpacking. They are large. We were car camping so they fit our needs. I like how you are able to double it up if your going solo, which will be fine when I travel to go mountain biking.

        Car camping in style

You just can't put a price on good sleep, and this is the perfect pad for car camping and glamping. I've used this in the back of my subaru, tent, and friends house - all for a perfect night's sleep. I've slept through alarm clocks, barking dogs, burning houses, and Superbowl 49 on this pad. What it lacks for in packability, it makes up for in a consistent, comfortable, cushy camping mattress.

          'Zzz' Catcher

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It's pretty simple--Foam AND Air? Freakin' cozy sleeping set up. It's not even close to anything I'd recommend for backpacking, but for car camping, it's the bees knees.

          Great Lightweight Pad

I haven't been able to use this camping yet, but its worked amazing for the few ski trips I've been on. Normally a couch surfer or floor sleeper, but this pad has changed my uncomfortable ever changing sleeping environment to a consistent, cozy bed. Super easy to just throw in the car compared to a full blown air mattress.

            Comfortable, durable, big pad.

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've slept on this pad for at least 90 (yes 90)nights in the last year whether it's in the back of my truck on trips or at home when my wife bought some new bedroom furniture that outgassed so badly I couldn't sleep in the bedroom for a while. These pads are very durable construction. They never leak any air. I let some air out to get the softness where I like it and then they just stay there for a month or whatever. You do get a small gap in the padding where they Velcro together, but it's never been an issue for us. These are big and heavy compared to lightweight, backpacking pads.

FINALLY - a decent, thick, light pad

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times

About time! These pads (bought 2) velcro together for couples snuggle-time (double bag), are light, have two air intakes, easily inlfate, are way thicker than anything we've seen (for the price) and are finally, finally getting us to sleep better than the BS thinner (but expensive) pads we've had for years.

I could go on & on but the thickness, pack-ability, and comfort of these is enough really: we're super pleased, finally. FINALLY!

What is the pad thickness and R rating?

Hey Holly! ALPS gives this an R rating of 6.9 and the pad is 3" thick. Be careful with the R value varying between brands as there is no scientific, universally accepted test for a sleeping pad's thermal resistance. Give me a shout at if you have any other questions or need help finding a pad. Thanks!
