    Love them!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had these for a little over a year now and I just love them so much! They fit me perfectly and stay warm in the snow. They have awesome grip and support my ankles well. I will be looking to buy these again and again in years to come.

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently hiked to Red Castle in the Uinta Wilderness, wearing a pair of Keen Terradora boots. It was my first true backpacking trip - we hiked 4 days, ~50 miles round trip, carrying about 30 pounds of weight in our packs on the hike in. The second and third days we day hiked with light packs, each day hike around 10 miles.

I anticipated sore feet due to the nature of backpacking and knew that the Terradoras were probably not the most ideal boot, but figured they would get the job done.

Our trekking poles clicked and clacked along the rocks that stuck out and dared our feet to trip over them, each stubbed toe more excruciating than the last. The more we walked, the clumsier our footwork became. My partner was usually a steady 10-20 yards ahead of me due to his long strides, and most of our time was spent in our own heads; a quiet determination and sweat inducing focus on moving us from point A to point B.

My partner's footwear was less ideal than mine, so I tried not to mention how all the bones in my feet were arguing with each other over space. I paid attention to the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves, the smell of horse shit that marked our path, the taste of the butterscotch candy giving me short bursts of life, the endless expanding grand spectacle that I was privileged to experience and humbled by greatly.

In hindsight, I remember reconnecting with myself and basking in the privacy of seclusion more than I remember how much my feet hurt.

But man, my feet hurt. A lot.

After that trip, I knew I wanted to backpack again. I knew I definitely needed better boots. A couple of weeks later I started researching what was available and I stumbled upon the Ahnu Montara III. I read some positive reviews in terms of their performance, and as a bonus they are a very good looking boot, especially with the full grain leather.

I was a little hesitant because I didn't know much about Ahnu as a brand, and was leaning towards a more recognized boot company like Lowa. What really kept me from committing to a pair of Lowas was the price - the Montara has similar construction to Lowa boots, but at a much better price point.

I am so glad I bought these! In comparison, my Terradoras feel like Ugg boots. I almost cannot believe that I hiked 50 miles in what are essentially Ugg boots. The Terradoras aren't a bad boot, but they aren't designed for intense extensive hikes. They are definitely more of a day hike boot.

The Montaras are a lot roomier (the footbed in the Terradora takes up too much space for me and my feet usually feel cramped) so I can wear midweight wool socks without any tightness or cramping. The midsole is also waaay stiffer which I did not expect. This is good not only for stability on technical terrain, but you can actually feel the boot rolling your foot forward in a more natural, progressive way. The shaft height is a bit taller than the Terradora, so you get a little more stability there, as well as protection from burs and pokey plants. The Vibram rubber is super sticky and gives you more confidence on slick rocks or uneven trails. I'm convinced that if I had these on my Red Castle trip, my feet would not have been in so much pain.

I seriously can't wait to hike long distances in these - I tested them out on a shorter hike to Lake Mary in Brighton, Utah this weekend. There is a good deal of snow at that elevation, and these boots made it easy to navigate while keeping my feet comfortable and warm.

I would classify these between the Lowa Renegade and Lady Light boots, at a more affordable price. I'm in love! Definitely worth the investment, and I have high expectations for their durability and comfort down the line.

Fit: True to Size. I wear a US W 6.5 and these fit perfectly

    Stellar Boot

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I just got these for my girlfriend off the recommendation of Gearhead Jean V. I could not be more stoked on the recommendation, they are nice and lightweight, but have a solid construction that will last a long time. Not to mention they are waterproof! These boots are definitley a must buy for anyone looking at a quality easy break-in, waterproof hiking boot.

I have owned the Ahnu Montara III eVent Hiking Boot for about 4 years now and I still love them! I have taken these abroad to New Zealand, and Whistler Canada (where the photo below is taken). Locally I have hiked in the deserts of Utah and hiking in the snowcapped mountains. Waterproof, ankle support, photogenic, and so comfy. These are my go to hiking boot!
