    Tough enough for the military.

The Adventure Medical QuikClot Advanced Clotting Gauze is treated with Kaolin, the same substance that the US military uses to help treat wounds on the battlefield. Now, nobody's saying that your adventures are going to end up in combat; what they are saying is, when you're in a rough spot, it helps to know the gauze you brought along is up for the task.

    Nicely Complements a Trauma/FirstAid Kit

I am a firm believer in having a dialed first aid kit. Further, I think it is best to start with a base kit and customize as needed depending on your usage.

I added this to my basic first-aid kit but have not yet had to use it. This is a great option to have if you do not already have some sort of clotting gauze in your kit.

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently witnessed a severe leg laceration as the result of a mountain bike crash. What surprised me the most was that on a very popular mountain bike trail near Salt Lake City, it took the EMTs well over an hour to get to us. Luckily a member of my group had a first aid kit (and medical training) and the laceration wasn't bleeding while the guy was sitting down. However, if the leg had been bleeding the story might have ended differently. I picked up this QuikClot because you never know what might happen when you are out adventuring. The best first aid is the one you bring with you. Don't be that person that is stuck waiting for help, pick some up and be prepared. I paired this with the Adventure Medical Day Tripper First Aid Kit - Mountain Series and it even fits nicely inside the case.

Ok so the product that servicemen and women would see in a trauma setting is actually going to be a Z fold Combat Gauze also made by QuikClot. This has been civilianized and in doing so they've virtually cut the price in half. Z fold Combat Gauze will easily run you $45.00, the gauze seen here is impregnated in the same way they simply give you a little less material to work with. Now a gauze based clotting (or homeostatic) agent is crucial for stopping an arterial bleed. While wearing gloves you're going locate the source of the bleed and then will need to pack the wound, keeping pressure constant is important and both included gauze pads may well end up being used. Once bleeding is slowed you will wrap the wound, athletic tape or even duck tape is ideal. If the mechanism of injury was severe enough the limb, especially an arm, may need to be immobilized, and a triangular bandage is up to this task. Keep the original wrapper and make sure it is seen by paramedics or hospital staff so that they know a hemostatic agent was used.
