Even more effective than its predecessor.

Fleet of foot and highly comfortable, the Salomon X Ultra 3 Men's Hiking Shoe moves quickly over rugged terrain to help you get to the summit, snap a photo, and cruise back down before the storm hits. The synthetic upper is lined with moisture-wicking textile and outfitted with Salomon's supportive Sensifit cradle construction, while the Advanced Chassis provides plenty of extra support to protect your ankles when you're hopping down tough trails. There's plenty of cushioning, too, with the OrthoLite insole, injected EVA midsole and footbed, and rugged molded shank. The whole package is topped off with a non-marking Contagrip rubber sole, which gives you loads of traction so you can confidently conquer the wet, muddy, and rocky terrain ahead.

    • Breathable mesh upper keeps air flowing through
    • Quicklace closure system secures the fit in seconds
    • Sensifit cradle stabilizes your foot on rugged terrain
    • Impact-absorbing midsole and footbed cushions rocky trails
    • Advanced Chassis helps support your feet over scree fields

    Great support

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 126lbs

Husband had this to say: "Received these last week and am obsessed. Went on a hike to try them out. Ground was rocky and slick and these never gave an inch. Laces tighten well and don't cut off circulation, and keep you well anchored when coming downhill."

    X Ultra 3 Fit

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought the X Ultra 3 after being extremely impressed post-break-in of my Salomon Quest 4D 3 backpacking boots. I lamented over whether or not to size up based on site reviews here and elsewhere of similar/ GTX models. Outdoor Gear Lab and Switchback Travel note the GTX model having a tighter toe box. While I don't require a 'wide' size I prefer more room in the forefoot of a shoe. I did not size up and am glad, finding them to fit true to size. While narrower overall than my Quests, they are very comfortable and have plenty of room in front of my toes. So much so that going up a half size would likely make them too cumbersome. But if you definitely require a textbook wide I'd look to their high top wide version. For comparison, I prefer running in Altras 10.5 because of the extra room, La Sportiva Boulder - 44, though a technical approach shoe so it's snug, (wore) Brooks 11.

    Great fit and performance

Salomon's shoes always fit me perfectly. So, when I am in the market for a new pair of shoes, I head to them first. These are a great pair of light hikers that do not need breaking in, provide plenty of support and provide even more comfort. I am not quite ready to throw out my backpacking boots but, if I am headed out for a quick weekend jaunt, I will grab these every time.
