    Maybe just not for him?

I got these pants for my boyfriend assuming they would fit the same as his 5 in baggies but the fit just seemed off. The waist was pretty tight but the width of the legs seemed way to wide? Maybe it is just his body shape. The quality of the short obviously seems to be there but they just didn't work out for him.

      Runs small

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have multiple other Patagonia shorts with a 32 waist, but this model runs small. If you buy them, size up.

      2018 Stand Up shorts

I bought my first pair in 2017 and loved how durable and short they were. The thighs are a lot wider than normal shorts, but I like the range of movement it allows since my thighs are more athletic. I decided to get a second pair on sale and the shorts this year do fit a little more snug. The material seems slightly thinner too, but it still feels durable. The thigh opening isn’t as big either and looks more like normal shorts. I give it 4 stars because I like the new smaller thigh opening, but don’t appreciate the tighter fit.

        My Go-To Shorts

Patagonia's stand up shorts are my all-time favorites. The fabric is comfortable, but tough and durable. I own these shorts in several colors and have been wearing them for decades. After years of use, it was finally time to get some new ones! Only one small disappointment – the Forge Gray color seems to fade easily. The Khaki colors hold their color just fine.

        The BEST!

I own more than 6 of these in different colors, I use them in hot days while on walks, hikes or a farmers market visit. I love them, they are strong enough to sit on dirt and wood or cement benches and such and they don't get damage at all

        Great shorts

I got these for my dad and he really likes them. They do run small - we had to return the first pair and order a size up. He says he especially likes the length and that they are very comfortable.

He Thinks they're too loose and wide

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought this as a gift for my friend because I thought they looked really cool and seemed like very sturdy pants. I thought they would be great for him for outdoor activities like climbing because they were a bit looser on the legs. However, this was actually the downfall for him because he thought they were too airy and open for climbing. He is pretty slim though which could contribute to the issue. He did have to size up.

        Way Too Small!

        • Fit: Runs small
        • Size Bought: 31
        • Height: 5'10"
        • Weight: 183lbs

I based my size choice on other shorts purchase on this sight. I bumped up one size based on the feedback I saw on size and it was not enough. I own Patagonia baggies small and they fit great. Most other shorts size 30 waist fir great. 31s are usually baggie. I can’t button the stand up shorts. I owned this short 30 years ago and wore them to sherds. They were my favorites. Comfortable, durable and versatile allowing easy movement. I don’t know why the size is such an issue. I’m very disappointed.

        Weird Cut

I had a bad feeling when I ordered these. I have slim thighs to start so I am always swimming in shorts, but these things were flared out like a skirt. There must have been 10 inches of additional fabric on each leg. If Jncos made shorts this would be the pattern they follow. I liked the length but couldn't get around the excess space in the leg.

I snagged 2 pairs of these at the beginning of summer and have loved them. I debated between the 7 and 5in inseam and went with the bold 5 in. They fit me better and show off these wonderful legs my Momma gave me.

Loving these shorts and loving our lands

I have bought Patagonia gear for many years. My recent purchase was not a disappointment. Thanks for carrying such outstanding merchandise.

        Great Pair of Shorts

I bought this pair for work and got exactly what I expected. They are nice enough to get by whether at work or boppin' around town. The only complaint that I have so far - the material is a little heavy for those hot days, but you can't win them all! I would highly recommend this pair of shorts.

        Weird back pockets, bad cut

So I read a lot of the reviews before purchasing these shorts (shout to Trev Lawson for his sweet review). I was expecting them to be smaller than sized and they are def snug. I was expecting the legs to flare out some (I think one review said like cut off version of jnco jeans from the 90's which is accurate and hilarious). I was NOT expecting the back pockets to be so ugly! They are cut like the front of a pair of jeans. It looks weird and dumb. And it's not so much a critique of the shorts themselves but more to Backcountry who has zero pics on the site. I don't recommend, the legs flaring out is worse than expected too. Don't recommend:(

my last pair lasted eleven years

I am hoping this pair lasts as long. These shorts stand up to some heavy lifting, especially the pockets which are deep and functional. The material is comfortable from the start and you know it is going to last. I am thrilled Patagonia is still making these classics!

You can get so low in these bad boys...

I have great legs for a dude; chicks love these tree trunks. I usually wear Chubbies shorts, but the material wears out a bit quicker than you want a $50 pair of shorts to. The stand-up shorts are like 3x thicker in terms of the fabric itself with what seems to be an enforced crotch area to deal with that chub-rub. The pocket sitch is a weird one, but you can carry all of your things and not look like a total doofus. My only qualm, and that's why these puppies are getting a 4/5, is the waist sizing. I'm a tried and true 31"ish and went up to a 32" because that's what was available. These guys are tight, not like "suck in the gut" tight, but like a "don't wash or dry on hot" tight. I would have rocked the 33" if it was available, but I could only find those on Patagonia's website. I would have done that, but BackCountry hooked me up with a coupon. I'll know for next time. Either way, these things have held up to 6 nights of heavy drinking downtown Nashville and got me two phone numbers from a bachelorette party, so I'll live with em.

          Classic.

One thing's for sure, you can't go wrong with this short. The canvas fabric is durable and lends a classic look - not to mention, those pockets! Can't get enough of them. The hubs owns two pairs, one with a 28 waist and another in a 30 waist and just about lives in them come summer - basically waffling between his Baggies, running shorts, and the Stand-Up shorts. He does agree that these fit a little more snug (in the waist) than the average 29 / 30 waist, hence owning the two different size options. The thighs do flare out, but they're not offensively large by any means (granted, that's my opinion). For size reference, he's 135lbs, 5'9" and wears a Small in Patagonia bottoms and wears a 29 in Levi's.

And while I know there's a version out there for women, I bought a pair of the men's 28 waist, 5in inseam for myself and they fit great. I often like the fit of the men's shorts a little more, especially when they feature a classic rise. The rise hits my natural waist and is a shade relaxed, but super comfy. The fit in the legs is super comparable to my beloved, classic Baggies, which I much prefer in comparison to the tight fit of most women's shorts. I'd rather not waste my time yanking on my shorts. So, ladies, if you like the fit of the classic baggies, the Stand-Up short (in 5in) is well-worthy a try.

          Love these pants!

Picked up a pair of these recently and am very impressed. They feel a little snug at first, but loosen up within a few minutes. Fairly short shorts and because of this compression shorts show when I sit down. The organic cotton is good too very soft against the skin. The real key to these pants is their durability. They really stand up to anything you can throw at them. The button is metal and the stitching is strong. The only thing i don't like is the Velcro back pockets. I don't really have an issue with this, but i think a more durable choice would have been metal snap closures since Velcro will wear out with heavy use. I never use the back pockets mainly because the front ones are extremely spacious.

I figured I would write a review while I am online returning these shorts. I am 5'11'' 150lbs. Normally I wear a 30" waist, sometimes a 31" waist in everything. I originally ordered these in a 30x5 and I am 3" shy of even getting them buttoned. I am returning them to the great people at backcountry for a 32x5 and I think that will still be a tight fit, but I can't go to 34x5.
Why 5 stars? These are awesome and I cannot wait to get a size back that fits!! The material was great, the legs were roomy (without being clown shorts), and the craftsmanship is up to par with Patagonia standards.
Late February in MN and I will have the right size back by the weekend! I love you, Backcountry!

I am fond of saying that if I wanted to wear shorts that touch my knees, I would wear pants. The 7" inseam is perfect for my needs. I have owned several pairs of these over the years and I will continue to buy them as they wear out every decade or so. Simple, tough, well-constructed, comfortable and they are great for everyday use on and off the trail.

5'7", 130 lbs, fairly skinny. 5" inseam or 7" inseam?

          Eric,

Short inseam is really personal preference. Some shorter gentlemen will lean towards the shorter inseam since it might be more proportional to their legs. But at the same time you'll definitely see some tall guys rocking the shorties. (as a note a 5" is a very short pair of shorts in my opinion)

what is the difference between the 5" and...

what is the difference between the 5" and 7" shorts? is that the inseam?
