    Perfect (everything) gym bag

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought this for my husband as a bag to use for the gym as it is smaller and he doesn't need to much room. He can easily fit everything he needs and just barely a basketball. No complaints on this bag as it does everything you would need and goes above being just a gym bag.

    The best duffel ever!!

This bag is very durable and water resistant. The colors that are shown are exactly the same when in person. It can also easily be taken on a plane. Lastly there is plenty of room for a 2-3 or 3-4 day trip depending on if you like to pack heavy or light.

      awesome duffel

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This duffel is awesome for short and well planned long trips. I've taken this on the plane many times and have never had an issue storing it above or even underneath the seat in front of me. The backpack straps make life so much easier by keeping you hands free. They are comfortable and don't dig into your shoulders too much. I walked for miles with it and never felt uncomfortable. 10/10 would recommend. I'll be getting the 60L soon.

      Friend for life

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

      This little bag is awesome!

I've started using it as a personal bag during camping trips, I haul my clothes, toiletries, books, cables, head lamp, etc. and it's a perfect size, I reserve my 60L for all the gear and keep this little guy for the more personal affects.

I haven't dealt with any rain yet but I get a sense that it would be fairly decent in that regard, especially the lighter rain that the Utah desert tends to throw around.

All in all I've found it to be very attractive, portable, and durable, I look forward to many years of use out of it! The one thing I would note is that it does seem a bit small for 45 L, seems almost like a 35 to me.

Bag is perfect for how I plan to use it!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was looking for a water resistant bag to take out on the boat when I go on dive trips. I needed something to hold a change of clothes, my under water camera housing, my save a dive kit, first aid kit, snacks, sunblock and all the other little extras I have accumulated that I like to have along with me. It is just the right size. I purchased the red bag, it was reduced significantly in comparison to the other colors offered-but red and scuba diving go together so it was the perfect color in the end for it's use. I like the mesh pockets on the top for chapstick, money and ID so they don't get lost in my bag. The bag is light weight which I was so happy about upon arrival. I thought it was going to be heavier then it was just from the look of it. It's very sturdy and I love the back pack straps as it makes hauling all of my gear to the boat easier if I can swing it over my shoulder. Couldn't be happier. I've got Patagonia coats and this is my first go with one of their duffels. I'm sure I will be quite pleased!

A Fantastic Bag and Our Favorite Size

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We have been using Black Hole Duffel Bags for years now. While they arent perfect, they are about as close as we have seen. We love the colors, the weight, the u-shaped top zipper, and the comfort however we do wish that they were a bit more water resistant. Dont get me wrong, they have treated us well which is exactly why we still use them religiously but they are not "waterproof" as you might be hoping. We think the 45L is the perfect all around size and is our go-to for most of our trips and adventures. To see our full review along with more photos here:

Great Bag - Too Bad Didn't Work for Me

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Out of the box, I immediately loved this bag (45L in Tidal Teal)!
I was needing to replace an old (easily 20yrs old) canvas duffel b/c the canvas could not be washed (gross) & the silk lining was finally starting to tear.
This bag was perfect! Perfect size for carry-on (which is my primary use) & stain resistant material that can just be wiped down if dirty. Awesome!
Sadly however, I am returning it b/c the shape is too boxy for me. My canvas duffel is the same capacity but is not as tall/deep is and is slightly longer with 2 outside/end pockets. I am only 5'3" and putting the BH on my back was awkward because it's so deep. I tried and tried but this was the deal breaker.
Two other negatives that I could have lived with otherwise: 1) There's no shoulder strap (however I could have used my old duffel's shoulder strap & easily attached it to the BH's backpack hooks) 2) The mesh pocket on the inside of the flap (instead of being one large pocket) is 2 small pockets ... I usually put larger items (iPad, documents) in this pocket ... like someone else had mentioned, it's a personal preference & would not have been a deal-breaker for me.
It is a great bag .... just too tall/deep for me.

      Versatile

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use this bag for everything. It works great as a carry-on, a bag for weekend car camping, a gym bag etc. I initially purchased this duffel to use for a trip to Costa Rica. I was able to fit 10 days worth of clothes and essentials in it and didn't have to worry about checking a bag. Now I use it almost every week to throw clothes in for a weekend camping trip and as a gym bag to carry clothes to work after a morning mountain bike session. The interior pockets are nice to keep small items organized and the large open space makes jamming in the rest super easy. My only regret is that I picked this bag up before the integrated shoulder straps and only have the one messenger bag style strap. Pick up one of these the materials, zippers and styling make for a perfect on the go duffel.

uncomfortable straps for a petite person

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Wanted to like this as its so sturdy, packable, and minimalist (I use packing cubes so don't like too many partitions). The backpack straps are probably fine for a larger person, but at 5'1" I felt they were for someone with broader shoulders. They kept slipping and didn't distribute the weight correctly.

      Great Size, Sturdy, Comfortable

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Reviews of the Black Hole have become something of an echo chamber but I’m going to keep the trend going: this is a great bag. I spent a lot of time researching and debating sizes and brands, and am really glad I got the BH.

First, who I think should buy this: I would say 45L is the perfect size as a gym bag (with change of clothes/towel/small accessories) or a 2 day trip bag. If you are a packing cube enthusiast and you take pride in minimal packing for maximum time, I could fit 4 eagle creek packing cubes (large, medium, small, XS) in my 45L with room for a toiletry bag, puffer jacket and accessories. If you’re really good you could probably make this work for a week long trip if you only had a single pair of shoes and enjoy packing minimally with cubes or a similar system.

If you like to overpack and be very prepared, or have many “genres” of clothes and shoes for a trip (hiking, going to the gym, etc) then I would go toward the 60L as your maximum carry on size. When I travel I usually have three pairs of shoes (work boots, two pairs of gym shoes), and gym accessories that occupy a lot of space. The 60L is perfect for this. I travel internationally at least once a year for up to two weeks and the 60L checks every box I could need for that trip.

As an aside, I considered the 71L base camp duffel for a long time but 60L is probably on the high end of carry on acceptable size, and I knew 71L would have to be checked

If you check everything anyway and like to overpack, get the 90L. I would only recommend the 120L if you’re packing for a ski trip for 2, or traveling the world for at least a month.

      Now the quick hits:

      Pros:
      - construction quality
      - backpack straps ease of add/removal
      - color (paintbrush red is an awesome color)
      - durability
      - size (honestly, 45L is JUST right)
      - Patagonia reputation (warranty especially)

      Cons:
      - my only complaint is that I wish the mesh compartment inside the bag was one large compartment rather than two separate. This is a very personal issue as the two small compartments are perfect for small accessories like cables or chargers. But if it was one solid mesh compartment it would perfectly fit an iPad - which, ultimately, can just be stacked on top of the bag.
      - I wish there were more bright color options across all sizes, but again that’s a minor complaint.

If you want a duffel that looks sharp, can withstand a lot of abuse and can be your go-to, I can’t see why you’d buy anything else.

      Great duffel!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Awesome bag. Super tough and well made. The 45L is the perfect size for 2-3 night trips, and the convertible shoulder straps make for two great carrying solutions.

Perfect Carry On For The Plane

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This was a Gift to my Brother In law and this is what he had to say about the bag:
"I live out of my gym bag when I travel, for small get away's I don't take much because i'm bouncing around with family so I don't want to lug a heavy bag. The 45L is perfect for taking on the plane and easily transportable, I can even convert it to wear it as a backpack which is a huge bonus. I love the simplistic style and just has enough organization, not to much its super durable! Take that baggage handlers and airport convener belts. Its my go to bag for all my small adventures!"

      Perfect summer weekend bag

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the perfect weekend summer bag, when all you really need is a change of clothes or two, and another pair of shoes, plus a jacket just in case. The backpack straps are detachable when you don't need them, and are comfortable if you do. Everyone should have at least one of these! They go perfectly with the black hole packing cubes, a medium cube fits great!

      Great for quick trips

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is the best duffel out there. The material is very durable, it's simple and easy to use with an almost perfect design. It is a must for quick trips.

      Best Bag!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the perfect carry-on bag. I have one in yellow and black and love them both. I prefer to fly with the yellow one because I can spot it easily...especially if I end up having to check my bags for any reason. I love that I can carry it on my back or my shoulder as well. This bag is WELL worth the money.

      Weekend Bag

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag I took on a real quick weekend bike trip to Santa Cruz . I was able to fit all of my riding gear including my helmet as well as my every day gear.
The best part was it was a perfect carry on bag for the flight. It fit everything I needed, I could carry it on my back or on my shoulder, and it fit everywhere I went.
