    Jack-of-all-trades versatility.

From the mountains of Maine to the jungle ruins of the Yucatan, the Patagonia Men's Quandary Short offers uncompromising versatility for just about any situation you find yourself in. Stretch-woven fabric is both tough-wearing and stretchy, with a gusseted crotch promoting full range of movement for adventurous pursuits. It's finished with a DWR treatment that repels light showers from ruining your fun outdoors.

Seeing that you'll be dabbling in everything from sport climbs to urban commutes, the Quandary features a classic 5-pocket design that's upgraded with a zippered thigh pocket for extra security. Its movement-friendly fit provides ample room to hop, bend, and stretch when you're hiking, climbing, and playing pick-up games at the park. Following suit, the curved waistband wraps around your hips with a contoured feel that's surprisingly sturdy.

    Not durable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 165lbs

First day of owning the Patagonia Quandary they ripped in the front bouldering indoors. I typically associate Patagonia with paying a premium to get lasting softgoods. In this case I wasn't right.

    Great for summer or travel

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I bought these for my boyfriend and he has feedback to share:
"These are very comfortable. The material is breathable and stretchy. I also like the fact that these have belt loops. These are great for hiking, biking, travel, and for everyday casual wear. Fit true to size.

    Another great pair of shorts

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Height: 0'0"
    • Weight: 0lbs

I ordered these for my dad and he really likes them. They run a little small, we had to return the first pair and order a size up. He says they are lightweight and comfortable. He especially likes how deep the pockets are and having the zipper pockets so he doesn't have to worry about losing things while he is hiking.

    A few annoyances, otherwise good.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

One feature that this short has but is not mentioned in the description, even on the Patagonia site, is that it has a draw string in the inside waist band like some swimming trunks have. This string (both ends) gets in the way of the zipper when you are putting it on, so you always have to fiddle with it to get it out of the way. It might be useful if you wanted to go for a swim. Swim trunks have a way of slipping down when they are wet. Had I known this string was going to be the pain that it is, I would not have purchased them. Also, the waist band material is a mesh of sorts that is rather rough and chafes when I do not have a shirt tucked in. But how often do you do that? Most of the time I am wearing a t-shirt outside of the short. On the plus side, and the thing that attracted me to the short in the first place, is the gusset, which is not easy to find. The cut of the short is good, the placement of the pockets is, for me, excellent. I like to put my wallet in my left hip pocket and that is the side that has a zipper. And the cell phone pocket, too, has a zipper, which is great, though it would be better if the pocket were narrower. As it is, the phone can go horizontal and it can be difficult to retrieve in that position, especially when seated. Note that the catalog photo of the pant gives the impression that this cell phone zipper pocket is narrow when, in fact, it is twice as wide. With some refinement, this short could be perfect.

    A few annoyances, otherwise good.

    wet wade like a champ.

I primarily use these shorts for well everything. From mountain to city these shorts are the perfect addition to a summer wardrobe. I bought a 33 waist as I usually do but wish I had bought a 32. The material stretches a bit while using. Love the shorts!

      Great shorts except drawstring!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 135lbs

So the shorts themselves are excellent. Great look, great fit and they stretch really well while climbing. My one knock, and it's actually a big knock, is the drawstring! Bad idea to place it on the inside and so small and flimsy. PrAna has same idea but it is a sinch cord on exterior and NOT across the opening of the shorts. I still wear them but I get annoyed by it the whole time.

      Favorite shorts

      • Size Bought: 36/10inch
      • Height: 5'11"

I bought 1 pair of these shorts and I loved them so much I ordered every color! I wear many different Patagonia shorts and these are my favorite! The length, color and stretch are perfect!

      The shorts of all shorts

      • Size Bought: 33
      • Height: 6'0"

I have a lot of Patagonia apparel and really love what they stand for as a company. These shorts fit great true to size, and have been really durable! I love that they have some stretch to the fabric. Definitely recommend

      Perfect shorts for all occasions

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 36
      • Height: 5'7"

These are great for any occasion, going on a hike with the wife or a ride with some buddies, they get the job done! Definitely going to pick up another pair for the summer now that the weather is starting to shift to the warmer months.

      Ready to ride

The short and the skinny is that these shorts are awesome. By nature, I am slow to change my clothes. My natural genetic inclination is aided by slightly awkward tendency towards idolization of items. Subsequently, I very easily fall into a pattern of wearing the same clothes WAY longer than normal social standards allows for. Sorry, I am an anthropologist - so you may be wondering where the heck I am going with this. Basically, if I think a clothing item is rad I will wear it non-stop until my wife forces me to bath/change clothes. In the case of the Quandary short - every time I put it on I can't seem to get myself to take it off until forced to. Why? Because seriously THESE SHORTS ARE RAD.

Typically speaking I don't like synthetic clothing, but with that said these shorts are the perfect blend of fast-drying material, comfortable next to skin cotton, and stretchy spandex. I have owned them for almost two years now and I always wear them mountain biking (zip pockets are great for keeping keys and phone in place). Despite the repetitive pedal motion the cloth still looks great with not apparent signs of fatigue. Honestly, whether it is warm weather hiking, playing at the beach, or just being a bum at home - when the sun is out and the temps are warm these are my shorts of choice.

      Great Shorts!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 32X10
      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 149lbs

Just got these the other day and couldn't be more pleased! A little on the pricy side but worth every cent. Great Patagonia quality material and a nice "non-baggy" fit. The pockets work out great for me, open pocket in the back for my phone and a little hip pocket for my car key. I'm 5'9" and 149 lbs. and the size 32X10 works great...not too tight and not too loose. I purchased a Thomas Bates Hiker Belt separately for when I want a snugger fit. But haven't had to use it. Great purchase!
