Give wet weather a run for its money.

As the old adage goes "expect the unexpected," so when it comes to travel, hiking, or casual wear, look no further than the Patagonia Women's Torrentshell Jacket to provide steadfast and adaptive weather-proof protection. Equal parts packable and lightweight, the Torrentshell Jacket is bound to come in handy when afternoon showers interrupt clear skies on an afternoon hike, or simply stuff the jacket into one of its respective hand pockets when you don't need it.

More importantly, though, the Torrentshell is both waterproof and breathable, meaning you're safeguarded against precipitation—without feeling like you've got the Florida Everglades accumulating on the interior of the jacket. Additionally, an extra coating of DWR treatment bolsters your defense against moisture, while the adjustable hood, hem, and cuffs, double down on your protection. However should you begin to warm up, the zippered underarm vents allow you to release excess heat quickly rather than having to remove the entire jacket and compromise your protection.

    Wearing this all the time

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I'm finding this to be my go-to jacket. I love the color and the fit. So far, I've only experienced it in a super light rain, but was still kept dry. So I'm not sure how well the jacket will perform in heavier rain. The jacket is super light and will need layers during the colder seasons.

    Performs Well in Rain

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XS
    • Height: 5'4"
    • Weight: 120lbs

I have used this jacket once during an all day hike in continuous drizzle/rain and did not get wet - so it performs well. The downside to this jacket is the cut - I ordered an XS and its still too big for me, and the cut is not very flattering and too big for petite women. However, I do love the Pesto color.

    My Go-To Travel Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

Everytime I travel, I bring along this jacket due to its impressive versatility and overall lightweight-packability. I typically layer up under this jacket, so when I'm feeling a bit stuffy or overheated the pit zips help to regulate my body temperature. Additionally, this makes a great travel jacket since the pockets have zip closures, decreasing the likelihood of lost valuables and offering peace of mind against ruthless pickpockets.

    Almost, But Not Quite

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 120lbs

This jacket has a lot going for it, including cute color, flattering fit w/ a slight drop tail, adjustable sleeves (altho they're still a bit long), & pit zips. The fabric feels nice to the touch (not plasticky), & it's breathable w/o mesh, which makes it pack down smaller. It also does not have a velcro flap over the zipper, which for me is a plus. On the flip side, altho the hood is adjustable, the pulls don't secure, & the hood snugs against your face ~ it would probably keep you dry, but covers the chin & feels a bit "close." Depending on the activity, it might also get hot. And the hood isn't stowable for when it's not raining. Overall, I wanted to like this jacket. But it was a lot more expensive than some of the others I tried, & had a couple of features (too long arms, oddly fitting hood that didn't stay secured & couldn't be stowed) that I just didn't like.

Great Gift for someone else or yourself!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

Great entry pricepoint rain gift for you or someone else. Unlike most rain jackets in this price range you get pit zips for venting, packable features, and recycled fabric. You really can't go wrong with the Torrentshell!

    Got Wet

    • Fit: True to size

I wore this jacket in the rain with my nano jacket underneath and after being in rain for an hour or so, both layers were wet. Was really disappointed. It wasn't a downpour or anything out of the ordinary either.

    Great for England rain

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: xxs
    • Height: 5'1"
    • Weight: 90lbs

Great jacket for England weather!. I like the adjustable cuffs and that it's form fitting. Perfect length as well. Not great for warmth on colder days, but I can layer with the Patagonia nano puff and not feel bulky. Thank you again Patagonia for making xxs sizing for adults.

    Great shell!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 160lbs

Love the slim fitting style. Keeps you dry and out of the wind. Would highly recommend this to someone looking to tackle any weather out there.

    Love the Olive Green Color

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 130lbs

I was deciding between this jacket and a Marmot one. I ultimately chose this because of the fit - I like that the shoulders aren't huge, but still allow enough room for layering underneath. I haven't tested it in wet weather yet, but I'm a believer in Patagonia quality, so I'm assuming it will do the trick!

    Excellent Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 145lbs

Bought this for my girlfriend and she adores it. It fits great, doesn't make too much noise when you move around in it, and most importantly it's excellent at keeping the water out, at least so far. She's only been in one rainstorm with it and it worked very well. Of course it's not actually going to keep you 100% dry--no raincoat can really do that. But it's as close as it can without being a true hardshell. I'll be recommending this to all my friends from here on out.

    Nice Basic Rain Coat

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is the cheapest of the Patagonia raincoats and it doesn't have a lot of features, but it works great as a raincoat for basic hiking or city wear. I only say basic hiking because it isn't designed as much for backpacking but it isn't super lightweight. However, I have had two and have never had an issue with getting wet. I like the underarm zippers in it. I have the forest green one and I love how it looks. It is a bit stiff and the zipper can be hard to zip up because the fabric gets caught.

    Keeps you dry

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 5'6"
    • Weight: 165lbs

This jacket was perfect for the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. It was raining as we portaged and canoed to our campsite. This jacket did not tear and kept me dry the entire time. I'm usually a Medium but purchased a large as usually when I have a rain jacket on, I like to have a sweatshirt as well.

    Dependable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 130lbs

I purchased this jacket to use as I worked as a river guide on the salmon river. I used it all the time and was impressed by how dry it kept me on rainy days. I love how light and pack able it is, it takes next to no space. The fit is true to size and is both functional and flattering.

    Keeps You Dry!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 120lbs

This is a great buy! I wore it everyday for 2 weeks on a trip to Europe, it kept me dry and I also wore it has an extra layer or windbreaker a few times. It packs small and is very light. Also it seems very durable. I usually order mediums in jackets but I got a small and have plenty of room for layers under it!

Compact, Cozy, and Love the Fit!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 138lbs

This jacket is perfect for summer hikes in the Rockies. I tackled my first 14er a couple of weekends ago in this sucker and it kept me dry and protected from wind up on the summit, though I was wearing only a light tank underneath and would have been freezing otherwise. If I wanted to, I could comfortably fit a fleece underneath. Maybe size up if you really want to layer. The 'pit zips' are a boon for those times when you would be too wet or cold without, but too warm or sweaty with the jacket on. Brilliant design feature! As a longer person, I appreciate the length in both body and sleeves; this jacket does not sit awkwardly and uncomfortably above the hip like some I've tried. It takes up very little space in my small day pack; I love it! I have not worn it enough to notice any slacking in the impermeability department, though I have heard from friends that this can happen down the line (it sounds like you can reinforce the DWR though). Lastly, for the price, you really can't beat the half-off that I paid, but this jacket really is worth it if you are looking for something dependable and comfy. Highly recommend.

    Great jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 175lbs

This shell was great, especially while backpacking in the rain. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because even with the pit vents open it still felt like a sauna suit a little bit. If I only had it on when it was pouring it might not have created this feeling but having it while misting was a little on the warm side.

    Unanswered Question

    Hello!
I am 5'6 and 108lbs. I have a long torso and long arms, but also have petite bone structure. What size would you recommend? After reading many reviews, I cannot decide between an xs or a small. I am not looking for a slim cut jacket in anyway. I am ok if it is slightly boxy, giving me room for layering, however I don't want it to look so boxy that I look sloppy. This jacket will be used primarily as a daily light weight jacket, and also for hiking/ outdoor activities.

ordered from BC two weeks ago and now my package is being held somewhere in phx. why havent i received my package? and is there a reason i cant update my shipping address? maybe thats why but now how do i get my package i paid for already!?

I am studying abroad this coming spring in Ireland and I am looking for a jacket that will be able to keep me warm, dry, and will pack easily. Would this be a good fit? Thanks in advance!

    Unanswered Question

Is the green torrentshell jacket on the video and pictures the aqua stone color because it looks much lighter to me

I am looking to purchase the torrentshell jacket for my girlfriend, but I am curious about the sizing. She typically wears a Medium in everything, rain jackets included. Two years ago I bought her the Patagonia Torrentshell Trench Coat (although slightly different than what is currently shown here: http://www.backcountry.com/patagonia-torrentshell-trench-coat-womens) and she had to go with the Large, mainly because it was a bit too snug in the shoulders.

Would I be safe in assuming that the regular torrentshell jacket is sized similar to the trenchcoat, meaning that I should also purchase the jacket in a large?

    Thank you.

I would think large would be the best bet because she can always tighten it at the bottom and for sure have room for lots of layers. I normally get a medium too but in this case a large would be nice and roomy for a solid shell.

I just want to follow up here, as the OP. I ordered the large for my girlfriend, and she was swimming in it. She could have worn a few jackets underneath, and rolled the sleeves up several times. I ordered the medium and it fits very well solo, or with a medium weight layer underneath. She does not need much more for the mild winters of Western Washington.

I'm 5'9 135 lbs but I feel like my arms are pretty long.... I usually fit s/m. Should I go with a medium? I want to be able to wear a down jacket underneath if needed.

I'm 5'8" and 130 lbs and can't decide between a small and medium! I'm from Oregon where it's not super cold, so I don't want it to be bulky with just a T underneath BUT I do want to fit a sweatshirt underneath for those colder days. Suggestions??

    Hey Zoie,

You would best suited with a Medium in the Patagonia Torrentshell., especially if you want to layer something like a sweatshirt underneath. My fiancee is 5'7", 125 lbs. and she wears a Medium in most Patagonia Jackets.

How does the "waterproof rating" compare to the numbers that Marmot uses?

How long are the sleeves? I'm 5'11" and always have issues with the sleeves and body being long enough.

I 6'2" with a wingspan slightly longer than that. Buying my normal size jacket, the sleeves were long enough and then there is a velcro cuff to tighten it up if you need to keep it from getting in the way. Hope that helps a little. You can also get with one of the gearheads on chat and have them send someone to measure a specific size for you.

I'm 5'7", 125#, 34 chest, AND long waisted. Would you guys suggest small or medium?

    Hey Laurie,

Sounds like you need the small! Medium will give you an extra inch in length, but you would really need to layer up to fill that extra volume.

Scroll down and you'll see that Laura LaBar (Backcountry Gearhead) and several customers have provided some helpful measurements and respective sizes! I agree with Geoff Conner's response - go with chest measurement. Sounds like you are at the lower range of a small so I think you might be swimming in a medium. Hopefully that helps!

I am 5'7" and weigh 140lb, I usually wear a size 4 or a small in tops and size 6 in pants. I am debating whether a small or a medium would fit best for me in this jacket, and I would like to be able to layer it. Could you recommend what size would be best?

    Hey Heather,

Patagonia recommends a a size S for a size 4-6. However, for the best fit, I would recommend going of the chest measurements. A size S is going to fit a 34-35 in chest and a size M is going to fit a 36-37 in chest. If you have any more questions about this jacket or any other gear, please give me a call at 1-800-409-4502 ext 4446 or email at gconner@backcountry.com

Can the Patagonia down sweater jacket be zipped into this Torrentshell and if so, do you buy the same size shell as the down jacket?

    Thanks!

    Best Answer

    Hey Michelle,

The Down Sweater really isn't a zip in compatible piece. That doesn't mean it isn't a great jacket for layering. Honestly, the zip in tech trend is really more of a gimmick. Most good performance pieces wont be zip in compatible because the cost and weight doesn't outweigh any benefit it provides.

I am trying to decide between a medium and...

I am trying to decide between a medium and large in this jacket, I am 5'10" and weigh 150lbs. I don't want it too tight that I couldn't wear a fleece under it too though. Any thoughts?

    Best Answer

Hey Erin, I would order that in Large so that you have enough room to layer underneath it. My shell personally runs more narrow through the hips so I find even if I don't have anything layered underneath the jacket it isn't too bulky. A really great measurement to go off of when jacket shopping online is your chest measurement. You'll want to measure around the fullest part of your bust and compare that measurement to the 'Chest' measurement on the Patagonia sizing chart, that way you know you are snagging a size that will fit around your chest (woman problems)

    I hope that helps!
