    A great all around midlayer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L
    • Height: 6'0"
    • Weight: 190lbs

I love this pullover. It is warm enough for colder days with the hood but cool enough when it gets hot.

    Incredibly Versatile

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 150lbs

I have been loving this R1 since I got it and have barely taken it off. It can be a nice low profile midlayer overtop of a t-shirt or long sleeve baselayer, or you can wear it next to skin as a heavy baselayer, which is very comfortable as well. Every feature is really well thought out. The extra long zip, balaclava hood, and long sleeves with thumbholes make it very adaptable to whatever situation you are in.

    Perfect midlayer

The scuba hood, half zip, and thumb holes on the sleeve make this the perfect mid layer... oh yeah, it is pretty dang warm too. Runs a little long so it will be sure to go under a climbing harness and not bunch up and it is a little slimmer fit over all, which also makes it perfect to put under your ski/snowboard shell, without looking like Randy from A Christmas Story. With the amazing patagonia build quality, I know this is going to last me a long time. what are you waiting for?!?

      Needed a Mid Layer

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'11"
      • Weight: 165lbs

What else can I say about the Patagonia R1 hoody that hasn't already been said? I was in need of a midlayer to get rid of some more buly layers I have been using and this surpassed my expectations for warmth and weight. The waffle fleece lined interior is warm and soft and combined with a moisture wicking baselayer, kept me totally dry from the beginning to the end of my day. The thumb loops are a nice feature because my jacket doesn't have the wrist gaiters with loops, these do a great job of keeping the snow out of my gloves when I take a digger. I am 5'11 and pretty lanky (usually right between a M and L) so I bought the Large after reading this was a slimmer fit. The fit is perfect but sleeves and waist are a little long. I would have found the Medium to be too snug for my taste so I can live with the sleeve/waist length. This piece allows me to forgo the facemask on cold days by zipping all the way up and wearing the hood with a beanie over top. Looking forward to using the R1 while fishing as well! Solid piece, nice colors and I don't mind the fit at all.

      Best MidLayer Out There

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'11"
      • Weight: 165lbs

Welcome to comfort town, this thing is a cozy treat for the wayfaring snow person. I don't understand it, but it somehow also sheds heat effectively when you're working hard (or hardly working, am I right??). The hood is the best part as it fits snug against your head making it a great layer to pair with any sport with a helmet. The additional thumb loops at the end also keep it from bunching when skiing with gloves. This is probably my favorite item Patagonia makes.

      Il never take it off

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 135lbs

From the moment I picked it up and put it on, I haven been able to take it off.! I wear it to bed, I wear it to school and work, i wear it climbing, i wear it skiing, its the ultimate midlayer!
Its super warm for the weight thanks to the square grid , and i love the slim fit. It really fills in the gaps of the active wardrobe, and Il never take it off!

      Excellent mid layer

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: xxl
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 230lbs

Love the thumb holes, and fit of this hoody. Great mid layer without a lot of bulk.

      Simply the best

      • Size Bought: medium
      • Height: 6'1"
      • Weight: 172lbs

Was better with the longer hem, diagonal chin zip and smaller face opening c. 2015. Longer zip is a great improvement though. Regardless, it's the best base/midlayer I've ever used. If you do high intensity winter sports, these are made for you.

      The best technical fleece/midlayer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 160lbs

Extremely durable, breathable, warm fleece.I use it for skiing, hiking, climbing, and I highly recommend it to all.
It is rather slim-fitting, but stretchy. Perfect for layering, and moves well with your body.
The styling could be a bit too technical, but once on the mountain, you'll love it.

I wish they kept the side zipper on the hood, as the center zipper in the new version is uncomfortable. And this hood can be used as an additional way to cover my nose and mouth in cold weather.

One of my Favorite Pieces of Gear

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 175lbs

I honestly will wear my R1 Fleece during any outdoor activity from late September until early May, Its perfect for Fall climbing, and especially for backcountry skiing. The half zip is a life saver when you want to cool off a little more and the hood saves you when you've got those ear biting winds.
Runs slightly small. I usually get a medium and it hugs just a little bit more than my other medium Patagonia shirts.

      Believe the hype

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 155lbs

      It's good.
On it's own up to the 70s, or under a shell in the 20s. Versatile, durable, layers well. Get one.

Going grocery shopping in my activewear.

      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'3"
      • Weight: 185lbs

To keep yourself warm on a morning jaunt to Whole Foods for overpriced breakfast burritos and a Fair Trade Organic single-origin Sumatra cold brew with a splash of raw agave, the R1 can't be beat. Though you know it's part of your pajama uniform, you can complete your transaction feeling confident that the approach shoe-wearing cashier recognizes it as a technical midlayer. Phew. I suppose you could climb, camp, or do other barbaric things in it... if you're into that sort of stuff.

At 6'3" and 185lbs, the medium is a nice trim fit. One star off for slightly short arms. All in all, it's he goddamn comfiest piece of bobo loungewear you can buy with USD.

      The Ultimate Layer

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 175lbs

Light, warm, comfortable, perfect for a mid layer for any use. I use the R1 for brisk runs, climbing, a mid layer for skiing, and hiking. Have yet to find a purpose for this pullover. The long zipper makes it easy to put on and take off. The hood is designed to fit taught against your head keeping the warmth in underneath the helmet. In all, a great mid weight mid layer.

This R1 Patagonia hoodie is BAE!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XXL
      • Height: 6'1"
      • Weight: 277lbs

I cant say enough good things about my R1 hoodie. I have worn it a few times and I love the look, feel, and the well made quality this hoodie has to offer. Two thumbs WAY UP!!

      Just Perfect!!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XXL
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 200lbs

I absolutely love the R1 line from Patagonia. They are more practical than a mid-weight or thermal weight capilene top. A capilene tshirt and an R1, then add whatever else you want, and you'll be dressed for success. The one aspect that is super great is that the R1 hood is designed to fit UNDER a helmet. I do most of my resort skiing at Loveland in CO, on the continental divide; i.e. always cold, always windy. Using the R1 hood, under my helmet, makes even the coldest days nice and toasty. This really speaks to the thoughtfulness and attention to detail that go into Patagonia's products. These fit slim, I bought XXL for the longer tail, to tuck into pants/bibs. The fit is slim enough that over-sizing wont be overly large.

      Perfect Layer!

Got this for my brother and he loves it! Patigona R1 is a great mid-layer jacket! The zipper is nice because the collar zips up to your nose to keep you warm and it zips low for good ventilation. The hood can fit under any helmet. Great for skiing climbing and anything in between.

        worth every penny

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: medium
        • Height: 5'10"
        • Weight: 165lbs

Bought this for a recent week-long trip to Finland. Rarely got above the single digit temps (Fahrenheit) for a week. I wore this every day, with either a short or long sleeve base under it and a down coat +/- a shell over that. It was roomy enough to comfortably layer under, yet still trim enough to easily layer over. I would pull my neck gaitor over my mouth and nose, then pull the hood and zip it up with another beanie over it and my neck / ears / head stayed plenty warm. Would buy it again in a heartbeat!

        Great Multi-Use Item

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size

What's great about the R1 is the multi-seasonal use. The R1 is light and warm which makes it super packable. It's great for colder summer nights, chilly Autumn/Spring days and a great underlayer for those Winter days. For me its a great underlayer for skiing because it is light, warm, and really breathable. I bought a XL and its a great slim fit. Perfect in the arms but I prefer the torso length to be a bit longer. As an underlayer the torso fit is good. This is a high quality item you can use year round. The only problem is now that I have one, I need 6 others for every day of the week.

        Everyone needs one

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: medium
        • Height: 5'9"
        • Weight: 150lbs

I bought this for a under layer for skiing and it is the absolute best. While searching for the best layer to use under a ski jacket shell the most popular choice for skiers was the R1. It makes perfect sense because this jacket is very warm and comfortable. It is very low profile so it doesn't make you look like the stay puft marshmallow man took up skiing and has come to seek revenge on the ghost busters winter getaway. So stay warm, stay classy, and buy yourself a R1.

        Very thin and stretchy

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: XL

I like my R1 Hoody but know what you are getting. The R1 refers to the amount of insulation. I use mine a lot for winter mountain biking, down to 10F, under a Gortex biking shell. I can pull the hood up under my helmet and the material is sufficiently thin to allow the helmet to still fit.

I am 6'3" (1.9 meters) and 190 lbs and purchased the XL. The material is thin and stretchy by design and I think the size L would have worked fine for me. I think this layer would work nice in a sleeping bag since the hood would leave no gap at the neck.

The thumb loops are a nice feature but feel somehow girly. I rarely use them.
