Used these on the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought these as I was afraid my hands would be cold on the top of Kilimanjaro. I switched from my fingered ski gloves to these in the middle of the night hike up to the top and went from cold fingers to warm fingers! These are super warm and just what I needed. If you are doing winter excursions and not generating a lot of heat I think these would be excellent! They sure worked for me on the tallest freestanding mountain in the world!

Thanks for your review Clayton, def a good point to consider. But for the average climber, I think this arctic mitten might be overkill. You're gonna be sweating your butt off! If you are gunning to summit Denali, Everest, or if your temp normally runs cold on a daily basis, then go for it. (Everest Base Camp doesn't count.)

For the average person, I would recommend getting a double layer glove (a glove with a removable liner) first. If you're still cold, then get an arctic mitten. The reason is because of functionality and weight. For the lower half of the mtn, you can remove the inner layer and add it in when you're higher up instead of bringing two full gloves. Remember, there's no porters when you're climbing in the US or Europe. You'll want to carry as little weight as possible during long trips. A chapstick here, a glove there, any extra ounce adds up quickly and this is all on your back!

And in case you were wondering, yes I was fine on the top of Kilimanjaro with a double layer!

(Note: I will say the price for this arctic mitten is really good though.)
