Excellent shell, especially for the $$

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium
    • Height: 5'10"
    • Weight: 150lbs

I bought this shell after fairly extensive research. Originally I wanted a gore-tex shell because I haven't found anything else that performs as well, but widened my search to find something less expensive. This shell is extremely well thought out. I love the pockets (1 chest, 2 high hand warmer, 1 internal media, 1 internal mesh. I love the hanging loop on the outside, the fleece in the chin, and the thicker material for the cuffs. The cut is excellent, a little longer than waist long, but not too long. I am 5'10" and 150 lbs and the medium fits perfectly. The hood allows me to put my ski helmet on and zip the jacket all the way up and still have a small degree of movement. The hood is also extremely adjustable. The pit zips are large and let a lot of air in. The face material appears tough and I think it will take a beating. I have used this to ski several days and really like it. So far I have only used this in light rain but it worked well. It is also very wind resistant and lightweight. Only con is the chest pocket is a little small, although big enough to fit my cell phone. I would strongly recommend this jacket, especially for the price.

    Great shell

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'3"
    • Weight: 195lbs

Bought this shell specifically for a Heli trip in BC, but it has quickly become an all-purpose shell. For the alpine, it was awesome. Super light, but durable--didn't get snagged by any branches--and I didn't feel any wind. I've also used it for some resort skiing, several winter hikes and it also kept me dry when we got blasted with rain the other day. The fit is great, it's trim but easily allows for a base and mid-layer. There's now true "powder skirt" but the waistband does have a cord to tighten it down. It's long enough though (even for me at 6'3") that it covered well over my snow pants. Not to mention it looks great. I've been super pleased and at half the price of other high-end brands, you can't beat it.

    Excellent 3L Alpine Shell Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this fairly basic shell jacket to use primarily for resort skiing, and I’m very impressed with Mammut’s construction and attention to detail (as usual). These guys really know how to make very functional outdoor apparel for tall, lanky guys like me. The jacket is a fairly burly medium weight 3L shell that’s softer and less stiff than standard Gore-Tex, with just a bit of stretch to it. I haven’t had a chance to test its waterproofing yet, but I can tell it’s impressively breathable. My XL weighs 20 oz. The fit is just about right for my 6’ 5”, 220 lb. frame; it’s the right length in the body and sleeves with enough room for layering underneath. I can easily fit a warm puffy underneath, but it doesn’t look baggy through the body with thinner layers. The detailing is simply perfect, and it’s one smooth-looking jacket in Titanium with blue zippers. All pockets are well-placed. It’s got two generous handwarmer pockets, one smaller upper chest pocket, and two internal mesh pockets. The Velcro-adjustable cuffs are really easy to adjust with gloves or mittens on. Overall, you really get a lot of jacket for $300 here (I paid less than half that, though). This would work really well for the wet snow conditions you find in the Sierras or Cascades. Highly recommended for cold weather alpine adventures, backcountry skiing, or resort skiing. Things I would change: make the upper chest pocket bigger and add a removable powder skirt. Con: the main zipper can be a bit balky.

    Cleaning / washing?

I assume you need to cold wash this jacket then let it air dry. Any other tips or tricks on extending the life time of the product?

I don't know if it makes a difference but I have last years model:
