    Traverse WR 2 Ski Poles

    Not every tour requires a whippet or an ice pick, but some do, and Black Diamond's Traverse WR 2 Ski Poles ready you for both powdery and icy ascents. Although they do not have a pick attached like a regular whippet, the Traverse WR 2 Ski Poles are the first Black Diamond poles to be compatible with the all-new Whippet Attachment. The ClickLock Dial secures the pick to these poles so you can have a whippet when you need it, and then remove it for the downhill, because skiing with a whippet is eerily similar to running with scissors. Apart from that, these poles still impress with a burly aluminum construction and adjustable versatility.

    Good improvement on the old whippet

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

    Okay so I haven't actually used these yet, but I'm super syched on them. Many friends in the past have gone on ski trips with me with their traditional Whippet pole (non-removable kind). I have always been jealous of them on the climb because when things get steep, their axe is ready to use, right there on the ski pole. Buuut... then we have to ski down. And then I'm glad to not be skiing with pointy things aiming at my face if I fall.
    So, this is an excellent solution! Just pop off the axe on the way down and they're regular ski poles.

    Only downside I see is they don't collapse nearly as far as my other touring poles, they slide down to just under 100cm, which is a bit long to strap to a pack if you're not using poles at all. However I'm pretty sure the only time I've done that is when I'm carrying an ice axe instead of one of my poles, so... perhaps that won't be necessary now..?

    WR = Whippet Ready

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

    Coolest thing since sliced bread. These poles are awesome, lightweight backcountry poles with super nice grips and strap - but are adaptable to take the a la carte whippet attachment.

    Woo!
