    Ol' Reliable

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This belay/rappel device is a classic for a reason. It's simple, it works, and you really don't need anything else. It's tried and true and enables you to belay and rappel with confidence. From climbing to canyoneering, this deserves a place on your harness.

my go to since climbing birth

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

this thing has been with me since I started climbing and is all time. belays well, rapps well. I always recommend BD products, and this one is one of the greatest and most durable.

    Good belay device

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Use this belay device quite frequently. I have nothing to compare it to as I have not used any other device. Seems to be of good quality and does the job great. Definitely would recommend.

Great ATC tool / Consider getting Guide

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Been doing roped climbing for about two years and only got into multi-pitch a month ago. If you foresee yourself getting into multipitch consider investing in the ATC Guide. All around great product that wont fail you.

    Great Beginning Belay!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Once you learn the ATC belay you can pretty much get the hang of any belay system. This is an awesome starting belay - super smooth feed with efficient braking ridges. It's my go-to in the climbing gym!

    Zipping and Whipping

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Used on many canyoneering descents and to keep the husband ground fall free. The teeth are nice when you've got rappelling obstacles to deal with. Burly and easy to use.

    Great piece

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

love this belay device! It's got nice grip when you need it, and, if you want less grip (say, for rappelling) then just thread the rope the opposite way.

    Been the choice for belaying/repelling

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This has been a product that has continued to impress me over the years. It is by far my choice for belaying and repelling. It's being light, ease of function and incredible durability through the long run has proven it my most important piece of equipment.
Limited to larger diameter ropes when repelling. Not quite enough friction when carrying a heavy pack. Friction is fine for larger ropes

    Overall A Great Product

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used this belay device hundreds of times in the gym but have yet to use it outside, I can't say if it's good at the crag or not. As far as top roping goes it's excellent because of its high friction edges which let you get maximum breaking from very little pressure with your break hand. It was also nice because when taking and giving rope it felt smooth and effortless and the device didn't catch unless I put my break hand down. As well as it's great feel with a rope connected, it felt great clipped to the harness too because it's very light and compact. The only problem I found was that it was hard to fit a rope of 10+mm into the opening; it can fit, it will just be very snug and if you get too pumped on the climb it can be tough to get the rope into the device. Other than that issue it is a great device, especially for newcomers to climbing, and will definitely serve you well as your next belay device.

    Does the job.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Only used this a couple of times, but it's worked well. The high friction side adds an extra bit of bite when belaying, but I prefer the regular side when rappelling.

Does exactly what its meant to.

I have had it for about 3 months now and I have put some good use on it and it is holding up great. Love how much cheeper it is on here vs REI or basically any other site. It has even gone down some since I bought mine but I still got it cheeper than any other site.
