Wicked fast wheels
There is a reason athletes like Jordan Rapp and other Ironman competitors trust Zipp wheels to take them across the finish line. The new Zipp 808 Carbon Wheels are an all-around wheelset for days of pulling hard in the peloton, pushing through the cycling portion of a triathlon, or competing in the local crit circuit. The Zipp 808 Clincher Carbon Wheels will undoubtedly help you shave grams off your bike and give you an aerodynamic advantage, without dipping to far into your racing budget.
Using the legacy hybrid-toroidal rim shape, the 808 is constructed using carbon fiber with Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control. The use of ABLC is recognizable by the dimpled golf ball like pattern that is present on the surface of the rim. ABLC smooths the flow of air across the rim's surface up to seven or eight degree of yaw, and reduces the amount of drag. Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control between layers of carbon, helping to absorb road vibration and impact, giving you a 10% reduction in vibration.
The 808 clinchers set themselves apart from other Zipp carbon wheels not only because of their use of an aluminum clincher rim, but also because of the rim breaking surface. To keep the cost of these wheels at a modest level, an aluminum rim is fused to the aerodynamic carbon faring. This combination of materials leaves you with a stronger breaking surface and quicker response time that doesn't require the use of cork pads. The 81mm profile of the faring contributes to the aerodynamics of these wheels and makes them some of the most rugged on the planet, outperforming multiple brands in an drum impact tests in both Europe and the United States. The ruggedness of these wheels means they don't have to be "race-day only". Throw them on for a training ride and see how they perform, chances are you won't want to take them off.
Designed and engineered by Zipp, the 88 front and 188 rear hubs used in the 808 wheels have an impressive amount of technology crammed into them. Getting their namesake from their respective gram weight, the 88 and 188 hubs allow you to adjust the bearing preload, after you have clamped the quick-release down, to avoid putting unnecessary force on the bearings. The KammNut used to adjust the preload can be rotated for an aero benefit. The Kammnut also uses and oversized 17mm axle that is 490% stiffer than a 10mm axle, with no additional drag.
The work creating a hub that is light weight and durable has lead Zipp to partner with the world's leading aluminum supplier to develop an alloy called Z310.9, proprietary to Zipp. This alloy has nearly twice the strength of 6061 aluminum and minimizes the chance of cracking around the spoke hole, a common failure in hubs. Zipp used electrical discharge machining to create these high precision hubs, making it possible to machine materials that are 50% harder at a tolerance that is 20 times greater than what is allowed by traditional machining and heat-treating. The use of Swiss Silicon Nitride ceramic cartridge bearings finishes off the construction of the hubs. Rest assured that for the price, you're getting maximum precision in hub construction, spokes, and rims.
The 808 Carbon Wheels do not require the use of a cork brake pad. Using such pads will give you zero braking power. Instead, use the standard black SRAM, Shimano or Campagnolo brake pads. Zipp has also approved the use SwissStop GHP2 brake pads on their aluminum clinchers. Note that the use of brake pads not approved by Zipp for use on their wheels will void your warranty. Make sure your brake pads are aligned on the aluminum rim to avoid unnecessary wearing on the carbon faring. When mounting tires onto the 808 wheels, make sure you use a 16mm x 0.5mm x 700c rim strip to make tire mounting easier.
The Zipp 808 Carbon Wheels are available in the classic Falcon Grey or Beyond Black.
