A zest and Zeal for life on the mountain

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a pair of Zeal Range sunglasses just before the best part of the ski season: Spring. Long days, beautiful light and still lots of great skiing to be had if you stay high in the mountains. One of the most vital pieces of equipment to have for long days in the backcountry is a solid pair of sunglasses that you can wear all day long. As I pulled the Range glasses out of they box and put them on, I knew right away that they would be comfortable to wear for long periods of time but also durable enough to get stuffed in my pack when I pulled out the goggles to ski. And to be honest, in the past few weeks, I've skied plenty of backcountry runs with only my sunglasses on, since the polarized lenses are better quality than my ski goggles and provide able protection from watery eyes while skiing.

One of my main problems with sunglasses has always been dropping/scratching them when they fall off my head. With a snug but comfortable fit and rubberized arms, I have yet to bend over and have them hit the ground. I can confidently raise them up off my head, snap some ski photos and then put them back down without worrying about losing them.

The lens quality on these sunglasses, as I mentioned above, is better than any of my goggle lenses or other sunglasses. The reduction of harsh glare from spring snow conditions is a major help when spending all day in the mountains skiing/shooting. As a professional photographer, I know a thing or two about polarized lenses and these ones are of the highest quality. Taking them off even for a moment in the midday sun would hurt my eyes, quickly reminding me about the need for good quality polarized lenses on my face.

These glasses performed above average in almost every category and I had only two minor complaints about them. The first was that sometimes, depending on the shape of your face, the glasses can get fogged up a bit when exercising. It didn't happen all the time but you might want to try them on if you can before buying them. The second was something unique. When trying to check my camera after taking photos, the polarized lenses of the sunglasses makes the LCD screen on my camera totally black. If I wanted to review images on my camera, I needed to lift my glasses to check the screen. A small thing that only affects other photographers but slightly annoying. It wouldn't stop my from buying another pair of glasses.

Overall, these sunglasses performed in every situation I have put them through in the past month of so. I would fully recommend them to anyone and am looking forward to using them into the summer months for biking and running. Stay tuned for a follow-up review!

A big shout out to Backcountry.com and Zeal Optics for hand-selecting me to review this piece of gear for the benefit of the backcountry.com community.

I got the Range Sunglasses out of the box and was surprised at how light they are! At first I was afraid they might fall apart easily, but after doing some research and reading about the Zeal Optics company I learned more about their plant based lenses and frames. Taking plants and turning them into something that totally rocks? Sounds like a good plan to me!

    Quality
Like I mentioned above, these sunglasses are extremely light but have a solid feel to them in the frames and the hinges. The hinges have a very solid movement and do a great job of keeping the frames open when they are on your head and closed when you want them in the case.

    Fit
These sunglasses fit so great that I actually forget that I have them on sometimes. I have worn them with a hat while hiking around Zion National Park and also various times while riding my bike with my helmet and I haven't had any issues with fitment. They feel great and haven't had any issues with them moving around even while cruising some trails on the mountain bike.

    Color
I got the Black/Dark Grey color and they look just like the pictures on Backcountry.com. Subtle grey colors on the earpieces and above the bridge of the nose. The Polarized lenses are great and and I'm excited to get out and use these sunglasses more.

So far I am loving the Range Sunglasses and I will update after some time to see how durable they are over time.

UPDATE: I have had the Range Sunglasses for a few months now and they are still killing it! I wear them every time I go biking and I hardly leave home without them. The hinges still work great, the lenses aren't scratched and the frames show no wear! I have liked these glasses so much I am planning on getting them with a prescription lens so I can really wear them all the time.

    Perform out of the norm!

Love these shades! I'm a trail runner in Colorado and often Utah. These are amazing for running. I don't like shields as I don't want to look like robo-cop, but I need a vented performance piece. This fits the bill nicely. Great lenses! 99.9% polar efficient!
