Although the magazines would have you believe that Yeti's astoundingly capable SB6 is the only choice for enduro racers and all-mountain addicts, the fact of the matter is the Yeti SB5 Carbon XO1 Complete Mountain Bike is quickly closing the gap, thanks to 10mm of extra travel up front for 2016 and a well-sorted geometry that balances downhill aggression with spirited climbing prowess. Bumping the fork up to 150mm of travel makes the SB5 Carbon that much more capable on stomach-churning steeps and fluid flow trails, effectively dropping the head tube angle to a gravity-composed 66.8 degrees. And although the rear shock leverages a seemingly undergunned 5 inches of travel (127mm), the Switch Infinity suspension maximizes every last millimeter with its exceptional anti-squat capabilities and near-bottomless sensation.
Developed in conjunction with the suspension gurus at FOX, Switch Infinity is the result of Yeti's engineers desiring a firm pedaling platform with distinctive anti-squat characteristics and an almost bottomless feel across successive square-edge hits. This is achieved through a patented translating pivot that switches its direction as the bike progresses throughout its travel, hence its Switch Infinity namesake. Ultimate, this innovative suspension lends the SB5 Carbon the pedaling efficiency for unrelenting uphills, all without sacrificing downhill composure on trails littered with intimidating boulders and bumpy root lattices.
Representing the evolution of Yeti's proven carbon chassis, the SB5 Carbon features an exceptionally stiff and lightweight high-modulus carbon frame. This translates to unrelenting acceleration when you're snapping out of corners and cleaning steep sections of trail. Complementing its carbon frame, the X01's build kit goes above and beyond what's necessary for trail dominance. And that's the point, seeing as the SB5 Carbon caters to riders aggressively roosting around corners, launching off natural hits, and railing around berms. You'll find a crisp-shifting XO1 drivetrain that ditches a pesky front derailleur for a simplified 1x11 set-up with a massive 10-42t cassette. The 150mm FOX 34 Factory Float fork gobbles up anything lying in its path with stiffness and smooth travel. Additional stand-out features include SRAM Guide RSC brakes for superb modulation and resistance to fading, a DT Swiss W/XM 401 wheelset that accommodates 2.4 inch tires, and a FOX Float Factory DPS shock with three-position adjustability.
