What is the width requirements for attaching to the crossbars? I have "universal" crossbars on my 2012 murano and the max width to attach is ~35". I guess I am wondering if the 38" width dimention of the box is different than the width dimentions required to attach it to my crossbars?

Hey rhumnzouc,

When it comes to the Yakima RocketBox 15 Cargo Box fitting on your 2012 Nissan Murano, it does fit with the regular version, but not the Cross Cabriolet version.

Gave us the extra space we needed

We decided to get a roof rack and cargo box instead of sizing up to a larger car that would be needed to carry extra gear for vacations. We were able to fit plenty in the box, it was quiet when driving and sturdy. So far we are pleased with the purchase.

Anyone know the clearance between factory crossbars and the bottom of the box? I'm wondering if there is space to slide a surfboard under.

It depends on your roof profile (if it's higher in the center of the roof). But my first inclination would be to say no--a surfboard wouldn't fit.

Anyone know if the RocketBox 15 will fit on the factory cross

Anyone know if the RocketBox 15 will fit on the factory cross bars of a 2010 Subaru Outback? In the alternative, anyone know if it will fit on a Yakima system installed on a 2010 Outback as the bar clearance is only 21" or so. Thanks!

According to the Yakima Rack Configurator, yes it will fit on the factory cross bars and I'm assuming it would fit on the Yakima system as well. You should check out the rack configurator at the top of this page to see for yourself and to look at other options for a box if you want.

Usually 110 lbs. is the max payload for these boxes. But you still have to factor in the total payload capacity of your rack as well as your vehicle. Most vehicles allow for 165 lbs. up top; however, smaller vehicles with a lesser spread often reduce the capacity to 125 or even less. And this number INCLUDES the weight of your roof rack, cargo box (usually 40+ pounds) and cargo. So keep it light and bulky.

There is lots of room for duffles and gear in this box but remember to load the heavy stuff in the car and ligher bulkier stuff in the box to keep the center of gravity of your car lower. It will pay back in handling and safety especially if you have a little car.

Typically there is room, but it truly depends on the length of the bars on your car. Also depending on which type of control tower you are using, sometime you can mount the box so part of it is just outside of the control tower on the side of the vehicle. Just be careful with stability and overhang.

There are also some other boxes that are narrower that are better suited to being alongside a bike rack. Since vehicles vary in width, you'll just have to measure and see what you come up with.

You can click the link at the top of the page that says "Build Your Yakima Rack>" and then plug in your vehicle specs. It will tell you what you need, if anything.
