Used these to transport two 13.5 foot tandem rec kayaks over 1000 miles doing 80 mph. Used bow and stern straps that come with them and had no issues. The design makes it easy to slide the kayaks in place and secures them when tightened.
Yakima Mako Aero Saddles
The Mako Aero saddle clamps on to most kinds of bars, and the installation is easy. They are sold in a pair, but two pairs are needed to carry one kayak. One for the front bar, and one for the back.
There are also some nice extras included in the box. There is a tie-down strap with rubber covering the cam buckle, which protects both your boat and the roof of your car. Also included is a bow or stern tie-down which hooks the end of your boat to the car's tow hitch. And each saddle comes with optional felt padding, to protect the boat. I found that with the included straps, nothing additional was needed to secure a kayak.
I've tried both the Mako saddle and the Mako Aero saddle. The main difference is the Mako Aero is compatible with more kinds of bars, such as the Whispbar. Also, the Mako Aero is compatible with a locking core, which isn't available for the regular Mako.

They work sweet
The Mako saddles work like a charm on my Jeep Cherokee's factory rack. They secured my 14 foot yak with no problem and held it in place even when I was zipping along at 70- I forgot I had the yak up topside! You will need to purchase two sets; one set consist of a pair of saddles. They come with all the straps you'll need. The only downside is security. Buy the optional locks or some bum could rip you off. Glad I went with the Makos. Cheers

How easy is it to take these saddles off...
How easy is it to take these saddles off and add a different mount, say for a bike or snowboard? I've been told to watch out for mounts that you have to basically uninstall the entire set up to switch for a different mount. I have the Whispbar on a Mazda 3s.
will these fit on trac rac bars?
will these fit on trac rac bars?
I just mounted two pair of Yakima Mako Saddles on my TracONE by TracRac system rack. I did it by going to the hardware store and replacing the factory carriage bolts that are 2.5" long with 5/16" by 1" long carriage bolts and large, 5/16" flat washers.
Place the head of the 1" carriage bolt in the track on the TracRac and place the bolt up through the Mako Saddle (opposite of the instructions), use the large washer and then the wingnut to tighten it in place. Works like a charm and doesn't look ghetto in the process.

Does ordering 1 set come with all 4 saddles...
Does ordering 1 set come with all 4 saddles or just a pair? Some places are selling them as a pair but this picture makes it look like you get all 4. Does anyone know?
This does not include all four saddles. You need to either but two of these or you could pair it up with a set of different saddles like the Yakima HullyRollers (Item #YAK0211) for an easier way of loading your boat.
