A good wetsuit won't magically halve your time in the water or allow you to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but it can ease the swim so you get out of the water faster and onto the bike feeling fresher and stronger. The Xterra Vortex Women's Sleeveless Wetsuit doesn't pretend that it'll make you a superhero, but it does provide plenty of buoyancy, flexibility, and comfort during training swims and races — all without blowing a hole in your bank account.
Buoyancy is important because it reduces effort and drag by allowing you to swim higher in the water, making each stroke and kick more efficient. The Vortex features 5mm neoprene on the front, which raises your torso out of the water to reduce resistance, and 3mm Super GKA neoprene on the back, which provides ample stretch for easy swimming without restriction. The entire suit is lined with X-Flex (most mid-level suits only have a stretchy liner in the arms) to provide consistent and generous stretch from neck to ankles, and the exterior of the Xterra is treated with X-Slice, a slick coating that reduces drag and lets you cut smoothly through the water.
Sleeves can reduce a suit's flexibility, so the Vortex does away with them altogether. It also features a low-profile hydrodynamic collar that won't chafe, and a sturdy back zipper with a lanyard that terminates with an adjustable hook-and-loop neck closure for a secure and comfortable fit. A zipper protector flap inside the suit protects your back from irritation, and X-MAX Seam Seal technology uses a triple layer of glue and double-blind stitching to achieve durable and waterproof construction.
