    The copper anniversary.

Wilier put itself in a bit of a difficult position leading up to its 110th anniversary this year. After the Zero family managed to drop significant weight with each new generation, the iconic Italian brand was left with the task of creating a successor to the throne of the Zero.7 that would pay homage to its quietly illustrious history. After two years of development, Wilier engineers managed to do it, giving us the Zero.6 110 SRAM Red eTap Complete Road Bike. The frame alone weighs in at a claimed 680g, and rather than wonder how they'll top it next, we're happy to marvel at the impressively crafted, limited-edition design for the foreseeable future.

The Zero.6's striking black and copper paint scheme demands attention of its own, and like the rest of the bike's features, it was chosen carefully. For Wilier, black and copper harkens back to some of the first bikes the brand ever created during the early 20th century, but the elegant aesthetic remains relevant to this day. Throughout Wilier's history, making subtle and carefully calculated changes to create each new model has been far more important than being brash and dramatic. The Zero.6's frame geometry remains refreshingly similar to that of the Zero.7; it's all tight angles and compliant, unified feel between the frame and Wilier's signature Integrated Fork. It was bred to corner aggressively and act decisively on everything from sweeping descents to punchy climbs, and now it's lighter than ever.

With the Zero.7, Wilier had maxed out what it could do with its carbon layup process, so trimming weight yet again necessitated revisiting the carbon itself. Together with Mitsubishi, Wilier engineers developed a new material known as Dialed, which it derived from a base material known as Pitch. Pitch itself consists of a blend of high-purity High-, and Ultra-High-Modulus fiber. It then integrated Dialed with materials we've seen Wilier trust before, including 60T carbon fiber and SEI film, using different temperatures and pressure during the molding process in an entirely new construction method.

Carbon of such high moduli tends to be incredibly stiff, efficient, and light, but understandably falls short in its ability to absorb road vibrations. Rather than dooming you to feel everything your tires roll over down to individual pieces of gravel, Wilier injects Special Elastic Infiltrated Film (SEI) between layers of carbon to relieve the harshness and brittle nature of high-modulus fiber through increased vibration absorption and impact resistance. Together, this layup achieves the impossibly low weight and responsive handling that defines the lightest member of the Zero family yet.

Eloquently blending heritage aesthetics with modern innovation, Wilier bestows a full SRAM Red eTap drivetrain on this Zero.6 frameset, demonstrating in all of its infallible glory just how far progress has taken us in the past 110 years. There are no shortcuts here—SRAM Red glitters on the frame from the hoods down to the enormous bottom bracket, and the cockpit itself is anchored entirely by Ritchey carbon.

Atop it all sits an elegant Selle Italia SLR Nabuk throne, with the whole setup rolling on Mavic Ksyrium PRO SL Exalith wheels. Icons of the cycling industry converge to create this moving monument to Wilier Triestina, and the firm partnered with an icon of a different world to add one final touch. In collaboration with Montegrappa—a brand with a long reputation for crafting the finest writing instruments—Wilier created a special edition pen called the Miya Carbon to commemorate the Zero.6 and Wilier's 110th anniversary. Each of the 200 frames produced comes with one of these pens, blending the lost art of handwritten correspondence with modern craftsmanship. Heritage and innovation, indeed.

    Dream bike

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Take the already incredible Zero.7, drop 100 grams, add Sram eTap, only make 200 copies...that's the formula this superbike. The Zero.7 was already one of the best frames I've ridden. With eTap and the weight savings it's hard to find proper adjectives for thew Zero.6. Give me a shout directly if you'd like to know more. btowery@backcountry.com 801-204-4557
