Doesn't Always Grip Rope

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've got a pair of these that I've been using as ultra-lightweight ascenders. I've used them on 9.6 and 9.8mm ropes, and I have decided to return them because of their tendency to NOT ALWAYS GRIP THE ROPE. In fact, most of the time when I'm using them I'll stand up on the bottom ropeman, then push the top ropeman up only to have it slide right back down as I sit back in my harness and transfer weight to it. I had initially hoped to use these guys for TR soloing, but based on their performance as ascenders I've decided against it.

Wild Country MK3 Ascender - Grip

Sometimes this ascender does not grip the rope. But I noticed that if you set the ascenders teeth with your hands it will work. I also noticed that with bigger rope size like 10.5 mm the MK3's teeth become smaller there for not griping the rope as good, it might work better with smaller rope size. I will try 9.9 mm rope tomorrow and see if it will work better.
