Ignorant packaging

Quality product but inconsiderate packaging. The sleeping bag is stuffed into a box that is too small for its size. Be careful when you open the box because if you use anything sharp you will easily but open your sleeping bag. There is no postage on the box to state that the box should not be opened in the general “cut open” fashion. I have received many sleeping bags that are packed into a box or bag and placed into a much larger box so as to protect it upon opening. They did not have that same level of consideration when packaging. I also contacted backcountry.com and they stated that this is “my fault” since it was not damaged in shipping. Seems very inconsiderate.

Best Bag Ever?

Bought this bag back in 2016 and have used it more times than I can count, but can count the number of times I got cold in this bag (once.. hammocking- the rainfly wasn't set up well). I honestly have no complaints- lightweight, good zippers, packs down well, and cozy. Paired with a good sleeping pad, I usually only sleep in shorts unless temperatures get below 20-25F. I have used a different compress sack than the one provided to get the bag a little smaller for backpacking but only for short trips because I didn't like compressing the bag too much. Around 7 years of owning this bag and I have no regrets, Western Mountaineering is a great company.

I did an overnight to test it out @ 5000ft/5degreesF. Nemo Hornet/Xtherm were the sleeping arrangements. I layered some merino thermals with down pants from Amazon ($60, a must have) and a Decathlon down jacket ($100). I also had down booties. I was roasting before I knew it. This can be an all season bag IMHO. You just have to help it out a little. As far as comfort, it wasn't really restrictive which surprised me considering its weight. Paired with my Xtherm, I couldn't feel any cold spots all night. I highly recommend this bag to anyone wanting the best that money can buy. I have an upcoming trip in 2 weeks that'll be 40 miles over 3 days in the Mts. I can't wait. I'll try and post an update if necessary but I'm sold already.

Best All-Around Bag I?ve Ever Had

Over the years I?ve tried a few different bags at various temperature ratings and the Versalite Western Mountaineering bag is by far my favorite!! One of the ultimate best features of this bag is the zipper and it?s virtually impossible to snag zipper. Nothing worse than in the middle of the night have to fiddle with a zipper and catching on the bag, which will NEVER happen with this bag. Draft tube collar is easy to use and well positioned, plenty of room and Wow does this thing pack down small! When the wife and I pack up the sea kayaks for a weekend paddle trip I?m always amazed at how much smaller my bag packs compared to the ?other? brand she has and mine is a much warmer bag! I also use my bag with a Western Mountaineering silk liner so I can keep my awesome bag as fresh and clean as possible for the longest possible time. With the right sleeping pad I?ve had it down into the teens which I find is getting pretty close to that 10 degree rating. I still slept just fine and was not cold but you definitely know the difference between 10 and 20 degrees. At the 20 temp I usually just sleep with the liner, a light merino wool base layer along with a pair of regular hiking socks. If I feel it?s going to be in the teens or colder I?ll ramp up the base layer a bit for some extra warmth. I?m would not consider myself a cold sleeper and the wife would say I?m a regular 60,000 btu heater. In the summer months I?ll leave it mostly unzipped and will sometimes pack a battery operated fan (I always sleep with a fan at home). This also helps regulate my temps and even in the 30 degree temps I?ve had the fan a blowing. I?m 5?9? 180 with a 42? chest. I purchased the 6ft right zip. I am more of a side sleeper and this allows me to open it up on the side I want to have my face hanging out of. I have plenty of room in the bag to roll around but let?s be honest it?s a mummy bag you are not going to sprawl out like it?s a king size bed!!! At my height the 6 foot bag offered plenty of room to stuff a camping pillow in the bag and even put my arms above my head if I wanted to.

Great three season bag

I bought my Versalite from the two "Gary's" at the Outdoor retailer show nearly ten years ago. Before that, I had, since the late nineteen ninety's, been using a Super Apache dry loft bag, which I loved for all my three season adventures. However, as I got older, I started wanting a little more wiggle room to help with some shoulder injuries etc. but still needed a sleeping bag that offered similar performance to my "Trusty" Super Apache. The Western Mountaineering "Gary's" suggested the Versalite--Man, what a great sleeping bag, its lighter than my apache was, its warmer and roomier, and it compresses just as small, i.e. I pack it into a 15 L compression stuff sack! And like another reviewer said, on the occasions when they got too warm they simply unzipped it and used it like a quilt which I also do. The Versalite is a very user friendly bag and mine has been, over the years, on dozens of adventures...and even though I really loved the Apache, the Versalite has added even greater comfort to my outdoor experiences... To Western Mountaineering, thanks for staying true to your vision and for making such well designed and reliable gear.

I have only had the opportunity to test my Versalite at 40 degrees. I unzipped it, turned it zipper-down and placed the foot end of my NeoAir XLite into the foot box of the bag and just used the bag as a loose quilt. I was a bit too warm at times but slept comfortably. I could find no manufacturing flaws in the bag at all. I carry it in a 20L Sea-to-Summit compression sack. I like the huge storage bag and will only use the smaller sack that came with it for laundering.

I own several Western Mountaineering bags of all temperature ratings, and I don't buy anything else because they're the best. But the Versalite is the last one I bought, and probably the last one I will buy. Because it's all that and more. It is super light true to spec, and warmer than I will ever need in three seasons. Most recently I used it several nights in the Winds above timberline. It was overkill warm for that. Stuffs super small, shell is downproof, zipper doesn't snag, roomy enough. What more can you ask, unless you need waterproof.
