Let's face it, there's a lot of fluff being passed around in the world of down jackets, and while the Westcomb Men's Cayoosh Hooded Down Jacket may not dizzy you with a bunch of features, but it does wow with its simple and straight forward design, and high quality materials. The lightweight Pertex Quantum fabric will resist tearing during brushy approaches, while the Polartec Powerstretch underarm panels let you move a little more freely during scrambles to the crag. The athletic fit allows you to layer the jacket under a shell during especially cold ascents in the alpine, and the elasticized cuffs and hem help to seal in heat around your body.

I havent used it in outdoors but after getting it today, I immediately noticed the great quality of the jacket. This and my Arc'teryx Cerium would be go-to mountaineering jackets.

The Cayoosh LT is down for action

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

To test the Cayoosh LT I took it on a 15 day, 1500 mile October adventure that started with fishing in Oregon and ended with a 5 day backpacking trip along the Escalante route of the Grand Canyon, here is what I found:

First off, the Cayoosh LT feels great. Made with Pertex Quantum, a featherweight 15 denier nylon fabric weave that is listed as having the best strength to weight ratio in the Pertex line. 850-900 fill Hutterite Down, (for those who don’t know, Hutterite down is harvested from fully grown Canadian geese raised as a sustainable food source. the down is hypo allergenic and exceeds the European Class I standard of 94% down-to-feather ratio, and is known for its 100% natural chemical-free water repellency. Taken from Westcomb’s website.) The underarms are made with Polartec Powerstretch, a breathable/stretchable fleece fabric that lets your heat out while still offering wind resistance.

The Cayoosh is made to move, and it performs as such. Movement is unrestricted and It’s warm enough to keep you comfortable, and it sheds heat well enough to keep you, well, comfortable. The athletic fit of the jacket is nice, I never felt like I was constrained while hiking, scrambling, or fishing.

There are limitations however. During a particularly early morning I was pressing my arms to my sides to stay warm where the down didn't cover, and another time I found myself freezing while riding a fourwheeler because the wind had free access to my armpits.

Limitations aside, this jacket has a spot in any outdoor recreationist’s arsenal. Westcomb is targeting a niche market of cold weather activities that require both warmth, breathability, and unrestricted movement, of which the Cayoosh LT is king. This is a great layer for skiers, hikers, climbers, fisherman, or anyone who finds themselves outdoors and in motion during the winter months. The jacket performed quite well as my primary source of warmth.

Bottom Line: Stay mobile and warm in the cold without sweating it.
