The Volkl Unlimited AC30 Titanium Alpine Skis and their included Motion iPT 12.0 Piston Bindings can take on nearly any snow conditions you’ll encounter on the mountain. Volkl used its Extended Double Grip construction—dual chambers running from tip to tail provide more support for the edges—to give incredible edge control and stability. Volkl and Marker built the Motion iPT (internal power transmission) Binding interface into the ski body for unparalleled response; you feel at one with your ski. The sides of the binding interface rest on the EDG chambers to allow for direct energy transfer. Pistons attached to the Unlimited AC30 in front of the bindings quiet chatter at high speeds, and titanium sheets in the wood core add stiffness and pop as you charge down the steeps.
Bottom Line: Tear on crud and hardpack, and rip tight turns through the trees.
I give these a 3, because I imagine for some skiers, these are a 5, and for me, they are a 1.
These skis are hard, unforgiving, and all about the carve. They are not an all mountain ski that behaves how you drive it. This is a one-trick pony, and pretty good at that one trick, which is high speed groomers. It is quirky on soft snow, behaves slowly on chop or spring slush, and is abyssmal in bumps. Whoever calls these "all mountain" either assumes that the the whole mountain is groomed, or is full of lies.
Thanks for your input. I have an older version of the AC30 and I agree that they are "goosy" in anything other than groomers. Had powder days at Copper Mountain this year ... they worked well early on, but once the crud built up from previous skiers it was iffy.
What is the difference between the iPT 11.0 binding and the iPT 12.0 binding? For an advanced intermediate skiier would it matter on which ones you had?

I did the demo gig last week in New Hampshire. Tried the AC30, AC50, and Apache Recon in both 163 and 170 lengths. Unfortunately it was a few days after the reported 16" dump (more like 10" I thought). Super grip hold on the groomers, either ski. The AC50 is a little slower to release with that width, but I loved them both. I bought the AC 30's to replace my G-3's, at $525 with the 11.0 binding (should have got a little more off that price). And I'm real glad I did the demo, cause I did prefer the 170 length. For a western ski I'll still consider the AC-50, but am really looking harder at the fatter Grizzly for the pow-pow. Finally a 2 ski quiver is at hand. That was me that just passed you at 35 mph!!
Kickin' the Volkl AC30s on a spring-like day at The Canyons. These are last year's model of the AC30s, but from what I understand, the difference between last year's model and this year's is the skin.
Get the 163, which might even feel a little short as you progress. But it is a black with grey ski, maybe the grey is a last year model the store is trying to sell.Yes the grey are last years model. I have them. They are the same exact ski just the design is different. Yes get the 163. Its a great ski
The Volkl AC30 is a great all-round ski. What an edge hold! A true 50/50 ski but I could run the gates with these. I found the AC30 to be very easy to ski. These carve very well and heaven forbid they also do nice christies. Nice even flex pattern and supprising good in the pow as long as it is not too deep. You can push these skis and they don't push back and lay back and cruise. One of Volkl's best. I like the titanium feel too.
Bent AC30s?I got a pair of AC30s at the end of last season after trying a number of different skis. I absolutely love these. However, only a few days into this season I bent one of the skis. I think I did it skiing some medium sized bumps, but no significant particular event stands out - its just noticably bent now.So here is the question: the guys in the ski shop basically said: "you can't expect to take this ski in the bumps and not bend it." This seems like total bs to me as I don't see how you could have an "all mountain ski" that won't go in the bumps...Thoughts?Thanks.Matt
I own a pair of Volkl AX3 724s. I bent 2 of them. I also ski bumps. The first time, Volkl replaced it with a used ski. The second time (this year) Volkl said they were too old, even though I've only skied them a total of about 15 times. That's why, if I buy Volkls, I'm getting them from Backcountry.Honestly, I love the way they ski, but I don't trust them with a 1-year warrenty. I can't afford to drop $600 - $700 on skis to have them bend after a season.
Wow, I always believed my ability would never go to the level I attained this weekend. Skiing on 14 year old skis, chattering down the hills, waiting for the slide to happen. I grabbed some demo AC30's and by the 3rd run, I was carving down the mountain with my friends who couldn't believe it was me. The conditions were great and I hit every slope on the mountain. I can't wait to buy my own. Thank you Volkl for building this ski for Joe ski bum.
From what i've read about and experienced of this ski, it's perfect for what i'm looking for.Pow is my favorite, and i love being able to ski through the crud just as fast as the guys. I tried this ski out (the entry level version, sadly) in brand new snow and i was totally stoked about how they performed.is there anything around like this ski at a cheaper price?sixteen year olds can't afford this... :)
For a new, current model year ski and binding package this isn't a bad price at all, even though it is definitely still a lot of money. You may try to find last years model or a used pair on other websites. Or be sure to check out steepandcheap.com or tramdock.com regularly for some sweet deals.
