    Time-tested design gets an upgrade.

The Vasque Sundowner first became famous over a decade ago, and Vasque is continuing the tradition with the new Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot. This Gore-Tex lined boot is completely waterproof for the soggy conditions that are part of life on the trail, and features a waterproof, tough, and supple full-grain leather upper that protects your foot from water, mud, and rocks. Speaking of rocks, the Sundowner features a molded PU midsole and TPU midfoot stabilizer to cushion your feet on rough trails and provide reliability stability to save your ankles, while the classic lace-up design lets you find the perfect snug and supportive fit. Vasque finished the Sundowner with a Pyrenees outsole, which is modeled on the original Sundowner sole, for grip, stability, and reliable braking on steep and slick terrain.

    Back to the original cut

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

Vasque this year went back to the original cut on the boot. Last years model had that weird cuff around the top. that would creat a seam on the inside that would irritate my ankle bone. This years show fits like a glove, and it is comfortable from the box. No break in time, and the leather is extremely soft. Last years boot the leather seemed tough and took six months to break in.

    Great boots!

These Sundowners are very tough, but still good looking! I've worn them hiking throughout the Eastern Sierra and San Gabriels, and they've been exposed to, and done well in, all weather conditions except for snow (but a little bit of ice!). I found the break in period difficult, but worth it. All in all, great boots.

Excellent boots! I purchased these Red Oaks knowing I was going to Ireland in the rainy season. Wore them the entire 8 days! Very comfortable and reliable. We had quite a few opportunities to climb and hike around various terrains and they were solid in every situation. Definitely worth the dollar bills.

I really like these. I haven't owned an all leather boot since the mid-1990's when I had an Italian made pair of Sundowners. These are indeed very similar. They have a snugger feel on the foot, but I really like that. Most higher-end boots have this also- more secure not only feels better, it's better if you're carrying a load. Historically, Vasque lost a ton of loyal followers in the last decade by producing bottom barrel boots. I went to Scarpa, others went to Asolo, La Sportiva, and Zamberlan. I'm always willing to forgive so I've given these a fresh whirl. In my two months of ownership they've fit and functioned seemingly well, though I'm not carrying a pack. The one thing I wish Vasque would quit doing, is commenting in review videos, review responses, product descriptions and elsewhere how they're bringing back the "look." The minute you make it about the look and not the function, folks don't take your boot serious. If you want to market this to hipsters only, then have at it- market it as the "vintage" boot for bearded wimps. If you want to market it seriously, tell folks they were right all along, the Chinese boots were crap, please come back and try again what we screwed up for over a decade but are now trying to get right again. I promise you'll get buy-in from folks who actually use the boot for what they were designed to do- for me that's backpacking and flyfishing the Sierra Nevada. Anyhow, I"m really pleased with these Sundowners, just tired of Vasque marketing the "look" instead of the function. Cheers, Randy

These boots not only look good but they also feel just as good as they look. I usually wear a size 12 in boots but this one felt a little to snug to keep. So after returnimg the size 12 to another store then realizing they didn't have a size 13 I came to backcountey asap! It's not snowing in New York yet, but by the looks of the grip on these soles I'll be more than ready. Traction is not a problem at all. These are so thoroughly insulated that you can expect warm feet all day with an adequate pair of socks. Plus they come with an extra pair of red laces to swap out in case you don't want to use the default burgundy laces. The bottom line? These are superb! Get yourself a pair!

      New Vasque Sundowner GTX

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size

Just got my New Vasque Sundowners GTX in the mail today!! They fit great! They come with two sets of laces (Red and Navy blue). I love the Hawthorne color and vintage look. I haven't worn them on the trail yet but that day isn't to far out. These look great sitting next to my other Sundowners that are over 15yrs old.

Thanks Vasque for another great boot!

Wow! They are using the original sole and dropped the padded collar! Very cool.

I bought my first Sundowners in 1993, and I owned a few pairs consecutively. But, once they outsourced production to China, I couldn't wear them anymore because the leather was so uncomfortable. I hope the "reboot" addresses this issue.

      Unanswered Question

This is not a question but a review this boot is made in Vietnam it is cut longer and narrower then just two years ago and it will require breaking it is much stiffer then it was just two years ago

How is the redesigned model running size-wise? I have a pair of well fitting Italian-made Sundowners in US 12 Mens, but the Chinese made Sundowner I bought in '08ish had to be sized down to 11.

These are built on the same last as the original so they should fit the same. The China version they went to for the past several years fits different. I have both original Italian Sundowners and new 2015 "re-boot" Sundowners. Fit is true to size for me. Buy the same size.

      No Vibram sole?

      Where are they made now?

John, both the previous answers are wrong- these are made in Vietnam with Red Wing leather. I consider that better than China- Vietnam sews most major brand backpacks. I wish they would bring these back to Europe or U.S. manufacture, but Vietnam may be a close second as compared to China.
