Wider than the previous Mantras

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I had a pair of Vasque Mantra shoes that I bought a number of years ago because they were the only hiking shoes I could find to fit my narrow feet. After going everywhere with me, they finally wore out and I decided to replace them with a new pair. But the design seems to have been updated sometime in the past few years, because the new pair -- while the same size -- is definitely wider across the footbed and especially in the all-important heel pocket. Even with high-volume footbeds replacing the stock ones, my heels are still slipping out of the shoes and my feet are sliding too far forward, giving me toe bang.

I live in Canada so returns are prohibitively expensive, so I'm keeping them and making the best of it -- just wearing them for casual city use and whatnot. But be warned: If you relied on these as your go-to narrow foot hiking shoe, they sadly no longer serve that purpose. I'm scouring high and low for a replacement shoe that fits my feet, and so far no luck (though options here in Canada are extremely limited).

run big

This is a nice feeling shoe on. It has what I want in a shoe, nice feeling, grippy sole. They don't feel like they will take a long time to break in. The only problem is they seem to me like they fit large. I think I'm going to have to size down. That is the only reason for the 3 stars.

Best Hiking Shoes

These shoes are phenomenal! After an entire off season of searching for the perfect hiking boot, I finally found it in this shoe. I love to hike local trails and travel for the more difficult adventures. This shoes is great. I love the low profile and light weight. The leather allows for getting through mud and water without wet feet and the traction is second to none. I've bought some very very high end boots simply because of the traction on multiple surfaces/terrains, but these work just as well if not better. Movement is kept simple with the low profile, break in isn't long at all, and best of all I've had no blisters or hot spots. Bottom line - great shoe, give it a go.

Do the insole of the Vasque Mantra 2.0 come out so I can insert my orthotics? Same question for the GTX model

Responded on

I know of people who have replaced the insoles. I don't know how involved or easy it was, but it can be done.

Responded on

Yes, they do. No problem. In fact, I'd recommend replacing the stock insole with a better footbed, since the ones they come with aren't very good.
