    Details

Protecting mankind from storms without the unbearable weight of his hammer.

When you're attempting to reach the heavens on Earth's tallest mountains, it's important to have a god looking out for you. Sure, the Valandre Expedition Thor -12-Degree Down Sleeping Bag isn't exactly like having the Norse god of thunder, lightning, and storms on your side, but it certainly is the next best thing. Lofty 850+ gray goose down insulates you while you recover for the next day's big push. European Norm ratings give this bag a comfort level at -2 degrees Fahrenheit, but Valandre's crew suggest you can survive in temps well below zero, should an unexpected cold front move through the mountains.

Thor's nylon ripstop shell maximizes durability and minimizes weight for your convenience. The shell, along with the bag's polyester ripstop lining, has a DWR treatment too so you stay dry when water is an issue. Valandre integrated a static drawcord in the hood to cinch it tightly around your forehead when temps get critical. The bag also has an anatomic draft collar to keep warmth in the bag, while its interlocking draft tube covers the quarter-length zipper to keep cold out.

    Excellent cold weather bag

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Used multiple times camping this past winter in SE AK. Warm enough to sleep in a light base layer and beanie. Booties and gloves if really cold. Nice fit w/room to store clothes, bottle, electronics down the sides, between legs or bottom of bag. Very impressive loft. Picture shows from closest to farthest the Thor, WM Cypress, MH Ultra Lamina 0.

    Excellent cold weather bag

This bag is a -50F degree sleeping bag, not a 4 degree.

    Rabbit,

You're right that this will handle extreme conditions of -50 F (-46 C). If you look at their test ( http://www.valandre.com//product_images/testresults05112010114350ThorIFT.pdf ) you'll find that it is rated a 4 F (-15 C) in the comfort zone. The "comfort zone" is the actual rating, but this bag will handle the Polar extremes.

This is incorrect. The EN test is widely inaccurate when we are talking about such low temperatures. Look at any -40F rated sleeping bag (Feathered Friends Snow Goose has a fill weight of 42oz) and you will find that this bag has more loft and a higher fill weight (50oz). Labeling this bag as a 4F bag makes no sense and is misinforming. A 4F, or 0F for ease of comparison, bag's fill weight is much closer to 25-30oz of down fill. This bag has nearly double that.

I did reported it before the same thing (via chat): I got the same kind of answer even when I pointed out the EN test report from valandre website.

Yep, it is one of the heaviest/warmest sleeping bag out here, not comparable to a 0F sleeping bag.
