Heavily insulated jackets are great for kids and blue-square cruisers, but when you're riding hard, a burly shell like Under Armour's Coldgear Infrared Hillcrest Men's Shell Jacket is where it's at. You generate your own heat when you're hiking for turns or hammering pow, so Under Armour skipped the insulation and focused on making the Hillcrest waterproof with a 10K waterproof and breathable membrane, UA Storm DWR coating, and fully taped seams to seal out moisture.
It does generate a little extra warmth via the Coldgear Infrared heat-conductive technology, which absorbs body heat and radiates it back, keeping you warmer than a standard thin shell. If it starts to get a little too warm, pop open the mesh-backed underarm vents for a shot of cool breeze, and if things get deep you can pull down the powder skirt and prevent all the cold smoke from settling down into your skivvies. Thumbhole cuffs keep your wrists covered and warm, and a plethora of pockets secure everything from your ski pass to your phone to your chocolate lift snacks.
