Stone's throw

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

That's how close the trout will be with this stone imitation that crushes fish year round! A must have for all waters.

I use this fly a lot for trout.

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

This is one of the most reliable flies I use because it can represent so many different things. I tend to use sizes in the 14-18 range depending on the area I am fishing. I like to use the patterns with the weighted bead heads because it helps to get the fly down a little faster and provides a little more flash in the water.
In streams I will fish this pretty deep during the midday hours, but I will shorten the depth when I see fish activity or during early mornings and evening fishing. I have found a lot of luck using this fly as a dropper on lakes in the evenings. If there is a lot of surface activity I will shorten the dropper to about a foot under my surface fly. I usually catch more fishing on the dropper than the surface fly. With very slow retrieves, I am able to allow the fly to do the work and simulate something emerging to the surface.
