Gold Bead Hare's ear

  • Gender: Male

So I purchased two sets of flies in my last backcountry order purely out of curiosity. Keep in mind that I can't recal the last time i wrote a 1 star review. Firstly its not American made, secondly its not lead free. This is to me at least upsetting. There are numerous lead free alternatives on the market. Im 30 ive been fly fishing since i was 19 these are the only flies i own that contain lead. I must say I'm sure their functionality is perfectly adequate. Finally the appearance was very sloppy, nothing like the catalog image online, tied rather loosely and the gold bead is tarnished and dull.

Return of a Classic

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I probably went 7 years without using a hares ear. One of the classics of american nymphing, it has fallen out of favor with many modern nymphers. Let their(our) mistake be your gain. This has earned it's spot back in my normal rotation, especially when guiding and the day is a little slow. Classic profile and buggy look can usually get a few fish interested, even on a slow day. With all the glitz and glam of modern nymphs, this classic still outshines a lot of them.

Very impressed with Umpqua flies. The quality is superb. No messy glue issues. Flies came exactly as described. Obviously it's up to me to choose the right fly for the right time and place, but when I do they work fantastically
