Love the Blast Match
I think the Blast match is by far the best "Flint and Steel"/magnesium rod fire starter out there. I take it on every trip. A little bit of dryer lint and one shot from the blast match and you have a fire. I use it to light my stove by holding over my stove and plunging the magnesium rod with my fingertip. Lighters are typically my go to but they don't work in the super cold and can fail when wet or just fail altogether for no reason. The blast match gives me peace of mind. I have used many of these types of fire starters and this is hands down the easiest to use and most effective.
Waste of money
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Tried for 30 minutes to light a fire with this thing. The sparks were flying but nothing caught. Let my friends and family try as well. No one could get it. Finally someone walked up with a little cigarette lighter and got the fire started. Stick with matches and lighters, don't even waste your time with this things.
A good back up.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This design makes it easier to get a spark off the flint. However, it's always tricky to get a fire started with just a spark, especially when it's windy. I still take lighters backpacking, and what not, but this is nice to have, in case your lighters run out or get soaked.
