Go big on safety.
Troy Lee Designs' D3 Carbon MIPS Helmet tucks industry-leading safety features into a package that could easily pass as custom-made fare. It replaces standard adjustment dials with a highly adjustable incremental sizing system that all but guarantees a comfortable fit for any head shape. The D3 Carbon MIPS steps up the safety factor with the inclusion of Multi-Directional Impact Protection (MIPS) design for an extra boost of injury prevention every time you drop in.
What makes MIPS so special is its ability to reduce impact force and decrease concussion risk in the event of a crash. MIPS consists of a thin, strategically anchored liner on the inside of the helmet that looks exceptionally simple but serves a big purpose. That little liner is designed to move independently of the helmet shell and reduce impact force on your brain compared to standard, non-MIPS helmets. If you do happen to crash, MIPS technology reduces your risk of concussion and dramatically increases your chances of walking away without a head injury.
The outline of the D3 is the same as the old D2, but Troy Lee played with the shape just a bit to improve its fit and feel. There's more EPS foam in the frontal areas, so you'll be safer when you face plant, and the new 3D cheek pads are contoured to fit around your jaw and face for a more secure fit and better protection. Troy Lee also redesigned the visor and front trim, giving them smoother edges for a better look.
The D3's shell is made from a carbon composite material that's incredibly strong and surprisingly light, and it's lined with dual-density shock pads that help absorb smaller impacts. Its removable, washable liner incorporates Coolmax and Dri-Lex technologies, which wick moisture, cool your dome, and fight odor. A host of 20 vents pulls air across your head and forces it out the back for efficient cooling, the adjustable visor is held in place with titanium hardware (and can be swapped out for the included second option), and a corrosion-resistant D-ring fastener cinches the D3 around your chin to keep it from bouncing off when things get a little rowdier than planned.

Safe Just Got Safer
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
The D3's proven track record just got even safer with the addition of the Multi-directional Impact Protection System or MIPS for short. While I haven't put the system to the test, it's said to reduce the chances of concussions under rotational impacts. It's good piece of mind to know that the D3 now includes this technology. Having met Troy Lee and his strive for creating the safest helmets for not only his employees, racers, but even his family, I feel at ease that wearing this lid will provide some of the best protection I can buy when the going gets rough.
Aside from the safety aspect of the helmet, the D3 has distinctly unique styling and a smaller volume than other full face helmets. Additionally, the inside shape of the brow on the D3 has been reconfigured a bit to fit better. With this new shape, I was able to drop from a size XL D3 to a Large.
