Instead of taping biners to flimsy sticks and working up a pump trying to lasso the first draw, simply attach the Trango Squid to a standard paint pole before heading to the crag. The patented Squid has the ability to hang draws, clip the rope, and even unclip the draws at the end of the day—now let's see if your tree branch and tape can handle that.

  • Easily attaches to any standard paint pole
  • Patented design allows you to hang draws, unclip draws, and clip the rope
  • Although any standard paint pole will do, Trango recommends the Mr LongArm ProPole

Very cool but trick with certain draws

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After a foot injury I got this to avoid falling before the first clip, but i'm now using it in all sorts of ways, clipping, unclipping, feeding rope through fixed draws, etc... If you like projecting, losing gear and bail biners will become a thing of the past. Also never worry again about stiff starts and high first bolts.

It's a great design but can be a little challenging with thicker draws (like Black Diamond Positron) because their spine is too thick to properly wedge into this device. This mostly becomes an issue when unclipping. On a number of projects I was unable to unclip so had to aid up to the chains by stick clipping one bolt at a time since that's the much easier thing to do.

Hanging draw: A-. With the Black Diamond Positron quickdraws it's not too bad because you are able to force the spine of the biner into the wedge by hand.

Removing draw: C+. This is the hard part as the carabiner is a little too thick to fit between the plastic arm and the rubber cushion. Ive only not managed to get a biner unclipped a handful of times but it's always taken a while. I'd imagine with thinner biners, this would be a breeze.

Clipping rope to draw already in place: A+. Easy as pie.

Best stick clipping tool

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Trust me, there is a learning curve on this thing, but once you get good at it, you'll never want to use a clamp or those coat hanger contraptions ever again!

If you're not man enough to rodeo clip

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This tool is perfect for those times when you are just to sketched out to climb up and clip that first bolt. With a little practice you will have no problem placing or receiving draws, or placing ropes in draws already at that first bolt. Any painter pole or most broom sticks will work with this.

Nice Tool

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I used this stick clip on a recent trip to Penitente Colorado. No problems clipping quickdraws and ropes. While there are homemade versions of stick clips, this device is quick and efficient. If you don't mind "highballing", you probably don't need this, but I found this to be helpful.
