25 years in the making.

The Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag is the culmination of 25 years of cycling expertise, design innovation, and customer feedback. Slightly revamped, the Classic Messenger Bag now features Cordura nylon instead of ballistic nylon. Cordura nylon is lighter, stronger, and more water-resistant than the ballistic nylon previously used. In addition, this messenger bag features a waterproof TPU liner to protect the bag's valuables from soaking rain and splashes.

This messenger bag features an exterior front and Napoleon pocket for quick-access to your keys, wallet, phone, and other small accessories. The large interior compartment features dual stretch pockets for holding water bottles or laptop chargers. A back slash pocket sits inside of the main compartment, giving you a place to secure a laptop, tablet, notebook, or loose papers. Holding small accessories, an interior organizer features small pockets and a larger zippered area for compartmentalizing your stuff.

Fully adjustable, the shoulder strap easily conforms to your upper body, and it features an improved airmesh design to enhance air flow and comfort. Compression straps (S,M,L only) prevent the bag's contents from jostling around, also working to cinch a jacket or sweater for added versatility.

  • Cordura nylon construction
  • Waterproof TPU liner
  • Laptop and tablet compatible (dependent on bag size)
  • Adjustable airmesh shoulder strap
  • Compression straps (S,M,L only)
  • Low-profile grab handle
  • Exterior front and Napoleon pockets
  • Large main compartment with front organizer
  • Interior slash and stretch pockets

Here's what others have to say...

Pictures and video show the bag worn over the shoulder and tight to the individuals back (looking like a true messenger bag). Based on the strap setup can you also wear the bag over the shoulder and have it ride more on the hip (more like a briefcase)? I do not bike to work and want a replacement bag for my current leather bag. Thanks!

Yes... you can use it like that. You might find that the strap is angled a bit for "across the chest" wear, but it should still be perfectly serviceable over one shoulder.

I'm a bit of a bagologist... and I would recommend against this bag if you're just going to use one shoulder. I'd suggest you look for something billed as a shoulder-bag rather than a messenger bag--primarly because on these more modern messenger bags you'll find it difficult to lift the main compartment lid with the bag still hanging off your shoulder, whereas shoulder bags are a little more suited for that type of use.

I use this bag as my everyday bag and part of the reason I love it so much is because of the flexibility it offers. I use it over my shoulder the majority of the time, but when I'm walking around campus I often use it on my shoulder in a more briefcase like style.
I looked at quite a few different bags and settled on this one because of the weather resistance, durable cordura fabric, and the practicality for so many different uses. I think you'd love it.

All Purpose, Great Bag!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have a small timbuk2 bag, purchased around 2010, and my only complaint is that a larger laptop is hard to fit in the laptop pouch. Otherwise, I've used this bag daily for work, taken it to conferences, on climbing trips, kayaking, and more. The water proof interior is great for containing messes, and keeping important documents dry from the rain.

(Photo taken around the time I was studying for preliminary exams, proving the bag can handle weight and volume!)

Pretty good but not exactly perfect

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was excited to get this product after watching the video posted by Timbuk2; and for the most part I have been happy with my purchase. I was looking for a more robust messenger bag for my daily cycling commutes here in Portland, Oregon and knew that I would need something waterproof and roomy to hold my work clothes, lunch, laptop, etc. The various pockets are very nice and everything works the way I expected except for two issues:

1. The water bottle mesh pockets are way too small and don't allow the use of standard sized water bottles, like nalgene or camelbak - this was a huge disappointment.

2. Secondly - the bag is not very rigid, so it is a bit difficult to load when it is empty.

My final issue with the bag is that it is a bit clumsy to get my cell phone into the pocket as compared to my old Keen bag; however, I am happy with the functionality of the bag and I really like the cross strap and the easy ability to adjust the strap on the go. Overall, I would recommend the bag.

Worth the money!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Mostly using my bike to commute, you need a steardy bag that will allow you to carry things from point A to point B. This messenger bag is great because it water resistant and is easy to clean. Yes, I've spilled a thing or two in it. The straps are easy to adjust to make it closer to your body. I've used the medium size bag and thought it was perfect. Not too big or small. Clip on some of your favoirite button pins are you are ready to go!

Great bag for the money

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was looking for a bag that was weather resistant, durable, easily adjustable, had a grab handle and could hold everything I needed for school and everyday life in one bag. I found it in the Timbuk2 CMB. I really like the way this bag is designed. Simple and effective in its organization but burly enough to take the beating I plan on giving it.
You can't find a better messenger under the $100 price point. No contest.
